From 1st Sep the new minimum wage has been agreed to be 40,436 Gross and 35,180 Net. Here's hoping that the over 60 rule of 1 minimum wage is in effect for both High Earners AND Property Owners.

I certainly hope so Waddo, and I mean for all renters no matter what age.
Well, suppose we've got a load more price rises in everything now to look forward to. Why is it everyone else can see this, but not the govt and unions? No need to answer!

Suicidal politically driven economics..turkey has frozen their minimum wage to reign in inflation..
The trnc whose economy is broken and relies on tourism and education now has a minimum wage more than double than turkey more than Greek cyprus and more than many eu countries. In fact higher than all group 2 14 eu members. Economy must be booming...
Whats going on here?
The employers Will almost certainly enforce the ratification of the supposed law of paying foreigners less. Something Will have to give. I read up to 50% less for foreigners.
Why would trnc want to join europe when its so richer than most of its members....

If they were to pay foreigners less and foreigners went elsewhere, then TC workers would actually have to get their act together and do some WORK themselves.

I don't understand why they keep following the same old, time and time again, when it doesn't work. There are other ways of bringing in money through taxes, perhaps more tax on high earners, higher tax on more "luxury" goods such as alcohol and cigarettes to start with. I know it wouldn't be popular, but surely something else must be done.
I didn't realise that foreigners were paid up to 50% less. Ouch, it must be really tough for them.

That wasnt what i said..
Read above.
The employers refused to attend the meeting.
They where promised a law where foreigners are paid up to 50% less.
There is 10 days for them to challenge the new wage...

On tax one mp recently challenged why corporate tax was so low and that casinos hotels Big companies where knowingly allowed to under declare their profits.
Suggesting corruption at high levels.
Seems they are targetting foreign buyers to pay for tax they should be claiming elsewhere.
There is an increasing resentment to foreigners here imo. Yesterday i was in a well known light shop buying a bulb. At the till it was a fiasco there was 3 servers and 1 on the front side of the desk serving only 1 customer at a time. They where creating chaos. Three times the front server picked my bulb and put it in another persons bag then when i paid in Cash the money was passed from one server to another to another standing next to each other. It was like a comedy sketch. I made a joke to an old man next to me i said only in kibris how Many people does it take to sell a light bulb...
It didnt go down well he said if you dont like the system you can leave..
I thought yes Many are and many are considering exactly that.
Sorry for moving off topic.

Reyntj, I have had the same thing said to me many times over the years but my reply has always been the same "That is probably why there are over 350,000 Turkish Cypriots living in London then" and just shrug (I learnt how to do it properly) and walk away. But to be fair, in conversation with lots of locals over the past 9 months, almost to a man, they have all been shocked at the way the Government is treating Foreign Nationals and ask each other this question - If you were a foreigner would you want to live in a country that treats people this way? - In general the answer has always been - No, people who come here come for a better life not to be treated so poorly - I still love it here and I know this is off post but it needs to be said somewhere!
I would like to know how we can be called a "High Earner" and because we rent we have to provide an income of 3 times the minimum wage, yet a family of four local people are supposed to be able to afford to live on one minimum wage? The single minimum wage (Gross) is now more than the UK State Pension yet we are "High Earners" because we rent! Yes I know that the new law (if it ever becomes a law) will cure this but what happens in between now and then?

pls do not forget... 40 k TL minimum wage per month / approx 170 working hours comes to 5,20 GBP gross and 4,60 GBP net per hr.
many, many are epmployed on minimum wage only and pay their taxes aso for this amount only, although they may receive more.
thats neither good for the state, nor for the employees, eg, their pension money.
so, for many the situation does not change, because they get more anyway, but, they now have to pay more taxes and a higher contribution for the insurances.. and will get a higher pension.
or, in other words, the "market" will become a little bit more "legal". it does not necessarily mean that now "all the prices" need to go up.
and if people "wondering" about that foreigners may get only 50% (or 60) ... many (hundreds, thousands??) of them do not even have a contract /working permit, so, no insurance, taxes, pension.

Unfortunately as a foreigner it is difficult to find employers to legally employ them. There is no part time or self employment stamp. There are, as kibsolar1999 states, people who earn money without being legally in the system. Maybe there should be a huge overhaul on employment , personal tax so one can work 2 or 3 jobs if they want to. Property has the spotlight firmly on it, maybe check who looks after the properties, pools etc, and if one has a friend looking out for you, fine but if their name crops up 5, 10 or even more times, tax they should be paying!

Doubt they Will allow that. Citizens can do that already. But foreigners need to set up a ltd co...expensive
That needs overhauling to like in uk..
Paying daft money for lawyers to set up ltd company.
Supposedly based on uk system...i can go to companies house uk and set a company in minutes online for £12..

Reyntj, I have to admit it does make me smile when I recall conversations I had with locals and officials 20 years or so ago when I was assured by banks, so called lawyers, government officials etc., that I would feel at home as all laws were based on English law. Apart from driving on the left with right hand drive cars, I don't recognize much at all these days. Certainly buying and selling property, is light years away.

how much was the old one
Last July 2023
Hourly 104,44 TL
Daily 835,52 TL
Weekly 4.177,61 TL
Monthly 18.103,00 TL
Salary January 2024
Hourly: 159.15 TL
Daily: 1273.24 TL
Weekly: 6366.23 TL
Now maybe
monthly 40,436tl
Hourly 233.28.
Daily 1866.27.
Weekly 9331.38
Back in the 2004 I remember people saying oh I pay 50tl £20 rate 2.3 2.5 for around 5 hours, people felt generous paying the daily rate, now when people would like 1867tl, £40 to £45 it does not seem so appealing to pay the daily rate for the same hours.

Totally agree, a complete new look is required on how to receive money (taxes) without hitting those who have their heads above the parapet.
When I received my kimlik through legally working my boss's customers asked oh will you be setting up on your own? Why? Was my reply, dealing with government offices, accountants, lawyers no thank you.
I often wonder how many people are actually registered to work to the population of working age.

Oh well, much will stay the same after the elections, the present incumbents will remain as the oppositions haven't the clout, all their families and the cats and dogs will remain in their highly pensioned jobs. I've recently had to attend meetings in Belediyes offices and three other official offices in Girne and have NEVER EVER seen so many 30K+ cars parked in the staff car parks. I know there are people who are struggling, but hell as like, they certainly don't work for the Government. One office I went to had the departments REALLY CLEARLY indicated and arrowed in three languages, but there was a young woman sitting behind a desk whose sole job it was to point to this the notice as you went up the stairs. Obviously someones daughter or sister.
