First Price rise
Just ordered a latte in a coffee shop in a hotel overlooking the sea in long beach iskele.
I come here because its cheaper than others..
The menu board says its 105 tl for a 16 oz latte..
They said from today its 120 tl.
I did say thats illegal...but the staff are nice so i just paid and thanked them
No doubt others Will follow and increase or have done so already
They have created a self inflicted perpetual inflationary enviroment.

Received a call from the hospital on Wednesday to say that a treatment had increased from tl4500 to tl5500. On Friday, two days later, it had increased again to tl6250. Is that an annual rate of inflation of 38,998%?

What I would love to know is why should a hospital increase so much in such a short time. Seems to me they are just following the band or the Consultants fancy another new car. Please don't tell me that ALL the staff, many of which just seem to walk up and down corridors or gather in groups for a laugh and a chat, are on minimum wage. Plus hospital porters who sit by the entrance door for hours on end doing nothing.

On the occasion of World Tourism Day, Cyprus Post compared prices in various tourist regions in Europe with prices in Kyrenia, the heart of tourism, on various websites.
Prices in Kyrenia are higher than in Greece despite the exchange rate difference, and compete with the most expensive tourism regions in Europe.
While the average cost of a meal for two in a restaurant in Greece is around 50 Euros, it is noteworthy that it is 60 Euros in Kyrenia. It was also learned that the prices in Kyrenia are almost the same as in Milan. In Milan, the average cost of a meal for two in a restaurant is around 65 Euros.
While the average price of water in restaurants in Kyrenia and Milan is around 0.78 Euros, it is noteworthy that it is 0.50 Euros in Greece.
It was learned that the price of espresso coffee is around 1.40 Euros in Milan, 2.30 Euros in Greece, and 2.40 Euros in Kyrenia.
It is noteworthy that the cost of a beer in a restaurant is around 2 Euros in Milan and around 5 Euros in Greece and Kyrenia.
MARKET PRICES
While the average price of a litre of milk in Kyrenia and Milan is around 1.60 Euros, it did not go unnoticed that it is 1.60 Euros in Greece.
It is noteworthy that the price of 1.5 litres of water in the market is around 0.88 Euros in Kyrenia, 0.78 Euros in Greece and 0.53 Euros in Milan.
MINIMUM WAGE…
While the minimum wage in Greece is 830 Euros, it is around 1600 Euros in Italy and around 1000 Euros in our country.

Re: First Price rise
ok, prices are up. agreed. but to compare prices from websites seems to be a bit risky.
to compare restaurant prices is also not easy. food is not food, service not service. but,
a quick search gives me a beer price (0,5) of close to 6 euros in Italy, not 2. in the market it is 1,50.
in other countries, here, eg, Frankfurt-germany (also a tourism hot spot), in a market a 1,5 liter bottle of water / soda you can get for 30 or 40 cent.
a big huge Döner with coke for 6 to 7 euros, a 28 cm Pizza in an "Italian restaurant" for 10. beer 4,50.
in a "pastry bakery" an espresso is around 1,70, a big (for 2) coffe 3 . a piece of cake pastry (double the size as Sah) 2,30 - 3.
and one liter of fresh bio milk in the market is 1,25.
(just normal) flour is now 50-60 cent a kilo. and so on.
so, we could discuss whether Kyrenia is a tourism hot spot or whether the normal market prices are "just a bit high".

Often locals refer to British as rich because salaries are higher and think the streets are paved with gold in the uk...they are finding out the reality of paying people higher salaries is that goods services and everything else goes up..they seem to be shocked thats the result..
The differrnce is the main economy here is tourism & that is in general worlwide low paid...& Many in kibris are on or near to the minimum wage.

Re: First Price rise
Slightly off topic but very relevant. Last week I did two supermarket shops for two people. Nothing extravagant at all, just basics with Instant coffee and honey being the most expensive. Yesterday evening I paid the Kibtek bill on line and to my horror discovered the two food bills combined were well in excess of the electricity bill. I realise that hot water has been provided by the Sun all summer, but it still came as a shock. Like everyone else I still have to do small "shops" to top up from time to time.

Minimum wage is now confirmed, despite objections the new one remains unchanged. So very hard for businesses.

why? other countries got this problem 50 years ago: efficiency.forestpixie wrote: ↑Mon 30 Sep 2024 10:34 amMinimum wage is now confirmed, despite objections the new one remains unchanged. So very hard for businesses.
there is no need for eight waiters "standing around" when it can be done with four "working", or, the way to build homes is completely outdated: ten (black , properly insured??) people throwing plaster to walls after they destroyed half of the "stones" as they do not "fit".
education, knowledge.. the same old story.
here, from today,
....while doing renovation work in Akıncılar, ... (E-47) lost control of the spiral machine he was using and was .. injured in the abdominal area
i do have an idea how this happened...

Re: First Price rise
Why is it hard for businesses?? Because most likely they'll have to lay people off who have families to feed and bills to pay. Outgoings vary from business to business. In Alsancak/ Lapta I know that the tax businesses pay to the belediye for the privilege of opening is astronomical. In some cases they've tripled. Whilst there is "no need" for some ways this is just life here. Having worked here for many years I know it's a hard mentality to change, in fact trying to do so generally gets you fired. Best to go in do your job, say nothing, go home.

Re: First Price rise
with people working for you with that appearance, you can not earn a penny.
ALL, workers, employers, government, have to understand that the "old way" slowly but surely will come to an end.
eg, if the minimum wage does NOT go up and prices will still increase or even remain the same, many workers will leave Cyprus.
it is a pity that the minimum wage came to 90% of the average national income per capita.. something is very wrong.
most simply do not earn sufficently, they just get minimum wage. or, they get the minimum wage and some commission.... cash.
the amount of money they charge you for "simple jobs" does not sound as many, most get minimum wage only.
the rise in minimum wage often means that employers have to adjust their accountancy to be more accurate.
i only say one thing: how much? 300. receipt pls. ok, but then VAT on top. no wonder this country is nearly bancrupt.

Sadly it's true, I tried to complain to the labour office I was unfairly dismissed. Their attitude " This is Cyprus, move on live your life"kibsolar1999 wrote: ↑Mon 30 Sep 2024 5:13 pmwith people working for you with that appearance, you can not earn a penny.

Kibtek up 15%....fixed charge c19%...
If they follow the law salary Will Rise by another 20% in 4 months as they have caused that inflation already.
'
Although the minimum wage is between 30 and 50 percent of the national income per capita in many countries, this rate has reached 90 percent in our country. It is not possible to sustain this."
https://www.kibrispostasi.com/c35-KIBRI ... slatiyoruz
Its hard to see how turkey doesnt intervene as they are supporting the goverment salaries which are going to keep increasing. Its completely bonkers surely the country is bankrupt soon. Perhaps thats what turkey wants....it all seems a bit bizarre. The only thing i can come up with is as they have no exports they dont need to be competitive like turkey and they believe the invisible exports of tourism & education are sustainable with the current inflationary course. Or they are planning some quick cyprus solution and dump the mess on the eu or there is no cunning plan and its what happens whene you let unions run the show.

Re: First Price rise
I support a number of charities and when I ask where is the money going the answer in one form or another is The POOR, which as we know are always with us. However, in my travels I pop into all manner of various types of retail establishments, and what do I see. Money being thrown around by locals, mostly women, so I ask myself, are the GREEDY a higher percentage than the poor. The answer I come up with is, a HUGE proportion of the POOR are NOT TRNC ciitzens, the TRNC come under the heading of the Greedy or in my experience, married to the Greedy. Walk into the car park of a Beledidye I won't mention, and all the Managers cars are lined up, not one of them costing less that 35.000 pounds, the Zabita, all new vehicles, and the list goes on. If Belediyes are supposed to be hard up, how come all these new vehicles, is it greed or graft!!
