My son found this in his bedroom in the small hours. Does anyone have any idea which variety it might be?

My best guess would be - Montpellier Snake - that based on the eye's and the colour. Best I can do but not seen one around my place s]or out in the wild so it is just a guess!

Is the bedroom on the ground floor ? Beautiful snake but wouldn't want it in my house .

Good grief, really scary to find that inside, no matter what type it is. Sorry, I haven't a clue, have an aversion to all snakes.

I m sure KC, will be able to find a thread from years back when there seemed to be loads of snake around, There were some beautiful identification pictures. Another thing to do is Google Snakes Common to Cyprus and again there will be loads of pictures. Because there is so much building, snakes nests are being dug up which is tragic.

Thanks for the helpful replies. The consensus seem to think it is a coin snake. If we come accross any more , I will try and get a clearer photo.

Thats the one I meant, thanks for such an effective filing system. I don't think it looks anything like a Montpellier so panic not wrymouth , and a Coin is much more likely. Just pray it wasn't a blunt nosed viper though!!

BJB, Keeping in mind the written description of the snakes as well as the pictures given in the link I posted first. The picture colour of the snake is different to the description colour of the snake! Now look at the picture posted by the OP of the snake found and have a look at the eye, head shape and general "spots/bars, etc" on that snake. It helps if you open both pictures in different windows so you can flip from one to the other quickly.

Now have another look and tell me it don't look anything like a Montpellier? Apart from the upper body colour and that colour depends an awful lot on when it was taken, where, quality of the picture, filters in use etc, etc. I try to identify snakes more from markings than colour's and take great notice of eyes and head shapes. Example is the Blunt Nosed Viper, you would not mistake that head shape for any other snake here!

This all just out of interest by the way and then do the same thing with the picture Keith posted as well - totally different - beauty and snakes seem to all be in the eye of the beholder - lol.

Having examined the various types, I still think it was probably a coin snake and I think my son was very lucky !

waddo, I stand/sit corrected. I've found in the past that the pool net comes in useful when one has crept up the wall for a drink in the evening, or in the case of a whip snake and nice long soak in the pool.
