Hi,
I have my pensions paid into a UK bank account and when I'm back in the UK I make a
withdrawal to bring back to NC.
I have not been back for a while now.
I have tried a bank transfer into my NC account but was charged £40 for the transaction.
Too much for me.
So, my question is which bank ATM here can I use my UK visa debit card to withdraw sterling
and not impose heavy bank charges.

Don't withdraw sterling here, charges a too high, get a Revolute or Wise card while your in uk , used either for all bills and payments in NC, bring back sterling from UK.

I wouldn't take Sterling out at an ATM here, it's very expensive, unless you have a Barclays debit card and use a TEB ATM. Apparently they have some kind of agreement between them. Not having a Barclays account, I don't know anything more than that.

Have you checked out what your UK bank debit card costs for taking out TL here? I know that I would get charged using my Halifax and Bank of Scotland cards and thus haven't used for years. I never take Sterling out of ATM, always TL. I've heard that it's cheaper to take out TL and use an exchange place for Sterling if need be.

As well as considering Revolut and Wise, you could also consider opening another bank account like Chase, Starling, Monzo, there may be others who don't charge for taking out TL and spending using debit card here. They are all app bases bank accounts. The problem would be getting the card here unless you go back to UK or get someone to bring it out to you. You would need UK address though.

I use Chase, Starling and Revolut. Easy to transfer money Halifax to them online and then use cards here for shopping and ATM transactions.

Some ATMs here do charge for using a foreign card, so you do have to get wise to which ATM's you should use. I've got a feeling that Bankamatik machines charge, but don't take that as gospel. I tend to use only one ATM now up at Limassol bank in Esentepe which doesn't charge. In the past I've found Ziraat, Iktisat, Turk bank, Universal and Capitol ATMs don't charge for taking out TL with foreign card. Hopefully others will advise if this is still the case and provide you with more up to date info.

I use Revolut and take £200 worth of TL out a month for bits and pieces. Given our highest note is worth £4.50 you’d need a rucksack instead of a wallet to be too cash dependant. But at least we have a 5TL coin now. I’d love to meet the genius that prioritised that. I’m assuming it’s the same guy who is organising the roadworks in Alsancak which pretty much stop you visiting some shops. My heart goes out to those shops in these difficult times, it must be a killer for their business.

Indeed Kanonier and ETS. ATM I use allows withdrawal of 8000 TL which is around £180. My wallet simply doesn't have room for all those notes, particularly when sometimes the ATM dispenses 100 TL notes. Remember the days when you used to apologise for handing over a 200TL note?

I do, and I would advise anyone who is concerned, to purchase a wheelbarrow ASAP, as they could be the next target for profiteering.

100TL notes pay out feels like the slot machine has paid out the jackpot

I did make a mistake in my original post saying I wished to withdraw sterling.
I did in fact mean TL.
I am still open to advice on which ATM to use.

Using Wise Card, Credit West no charge for TL

I wish I could exist on 5,000tl a month. I did try but couldn't do it.

Thanks, but what I have is a UK, coop bank visa debit card.

You'd be much better off getting another bank account as mentioned above to transfer from Co-op, to save you transactions fees at UK end.

I use Revlout. All CardPlus ATM do not charge. Only use bank located ATM.
Stand Alone ones are very hard to get your card back. If ATM retains it!!

Wise, Revolute sound good but as I am not going back to the UK soon no good to me.

Get one posted to your UK address, freeze/disable it and then get someone to bring it out to you, then unfreeze it.. but you can have a virtual card in the meantime, that's what I use day in, day out and then no need to use ATM.

Agree with Mimi2, definitely use ATM attached to bank, as it's difficult to get your card back if swallowed by stand alone ATM. Happened to me once many years ago and took 3 weeks to get card back. Hence I now have several different cards to use just in case, but stick to ATM with bank attached unless desperate.
Use any of the ATMs suggested in posts above, but you will get charged at UK end. Make sure you don't use ATM's exchange fee as that will add to your costs.

Credit West swallowed a card today and its attached to the bank so no problem Will pop in as soon as they open, show them either passport or driving Licence, they'll pull out the draw behind the ATM, I sign a bit of paper and thats it. Eight years ago, a bankomatic ATM in Lapta did the same, it took 6 weeks to get card back. I think it had something to do with their ATM's being allied to 4 different banks. In the end I had to go to a Garanti in Lefkosa and sign my life away. Prior to which I spend hours on the phone to office number displayed on machine only to find I was speaking to Lapta in Turkey. No wonder the guy at the other end couldn't understand where the machine was operating when I tried to explain.

If you read through the posts above, you will see recommendations for which ATMs don't charge for using a foreign card. I gave you several and others have made other recommendations.

The advice about setting up a Revolut account whilst you are here is relevant because the ability to create virtual 'cards' means you don't need a physical card to use the ability to transfer money... you can convert it into tl and spend it from your mobile phone... no, it doesn't solve your ATM dilemma but that has been addressed and answered by others already.
