What can cause the above to fail; about two years old and just stopped working with about 280GB remaining of 1TB?
Is it recoverable?

TIA

Hard drives can and do fail at any time, so always have a backup, either to another hard or SSD drive(s) or online, e.g., Dropbox or Blaze. The amount of stuff you have on your hard drive (you have 280 GB remaining out of 1TB) doesn't lead to failure for that reason, it's the hard drive itself that's failed, not the amount of storage it has. Have a look on YouTube for advice on backups and hard drive issues.
