Our meters have just been read and there is a new charge on the bill - Sokak Aydinlatma Bedeli which translates to street lighting cost. We thought we paid the Belediye direct for this. Has anyone else had this charge, especially in Esentepe district? We can think of a couple of reasons for this: a) our street lighting has recently become operational or b) Esentepe Belediye haven't paid their bills so Kibtek are charging us direct. Would also like to know if this is a one off charge or monthly.

Yes that was on ours to but no charge on it., we pay that on our water bill monthly TL1.14.

The wording was on our last bill (6th Jan), no charge against it either but today's bill has 15.20TL. Sounds like it may be a general charge - may be due to none of the Belediye paying their leccy bills... In Esentepe district, we pay 180TL per year for street lighting and rubbish collection. We have lived here nearly 7 years and only recently got street lighting.

Sounds to me like you should be talking to both parties, good luck & keep us updated.

I wonder wether it will be a standard charge per household or will it be proportional to your personal usage

There was something in the paper recently that payment for electricity would be on that bill and not the water bill. This was to ensure that KIBTEK got their money in stead of waiting to be paid by local authorities.

There are threads around this and other forums regarding street lighting, that being Kib Tek are charging all users from first January. Beledye should therefore not be charging.

The reason that Kib Tek are charging us is that Belediye never handed over the money to Kib Tek that we paid them. No doubt the "rates" will have to increase to replace the illegal supplement they were receiving via the charge for lighting.

Well that is my interpretation.

At least it gives some kind of reason for it - can't blame Kibtek for doing it but it is annoying that Esentepe charged us 180TL in December for Street Lighting and Rubbish collection and now we are paying again. No doubt there will be no change in the charge next December even though it's only for rubbish collection.

For 7 years we paid for street lighting, for bin emptying and for street cleaning. However, we had NO street lights, NO bins and NO street cleaning (we live on a quag mire of an unmade up road) For 7 years we complained bitterly to Alsancak Belly and the replies we received every years were (a) you drive on the main Girne Lapta road (b) you leave your black bin liners on the side of the Girne-Lapta Road or in bins on the side of the road (c) you drive on the Girne- Lapta Road, THEREFORE you have to pay for the priviledge.

Street lighting does not mean your own personal light, it is no different to UK when you paid general rates, community charge or whatever it is called this week. You pay for the useof lights throught your area.

Our electric bill seems to have blown away so do notknow what is on it but our water bill from Lapta Belediye which had in the past lighting charge included now has zero recorded for lights.

It is on my bill too but no amount - just all the zero's.

Why did we not read about this in the newspapers.

These things just appear on the bill with no explanation. Not good enough!

It was in the press and as I said earlier discussed at length on various forums.
Do not know if it wasin that great source of news, Cyprus Today because I do not buy it.

We have always been charged by the beledye but just had our electricity bill extra 16.20 TL for lighting, not only on our bill but on the block communal electric bill and on the pool electric bill!!!!!!
Spoke to our Turkish neighbour and our Cypriot neighbour and usual shrug of the shoulders and nothing you can do just have to pay it!!
So not only are we paying the 16.20 for our place but a portion of the other bills as well!!!!
