Fruit & Veg rip off - Şah

Was in Şah this morning, as the cherry's looked nice, thought I'll have some until i saw the price: almost 700 Tl a Kg - at today's exchange process is £12.87, €14.92! I looked at Lidl in the south, normally €8.99, but 25% off at the moment = €6.74.

Pure profiteering without a doubt - in fact all the fruit & veg was silly money. All we can do is vote with our feet! And the government wonders why people shop in the south, and by that I mean mostly TC's.

I thought most people living here knew Sah is very expensive compared to others. Nice supermarket but maybe a bit like shopping in Harrods food Hall compared to Tescos 😆 cherries yesterday Erdener, 600 tl a kilo, however, we got some beautiful cherries 400 tl a kilo last week.. if you choose to shop in an expensive supermarket, you can hardly complain about the prices, IMHO.

I think Sha is horses for courses. I've been trying to find proper smoked haddock everywhere for kedgeree and they are going to be my last hope next week. Plus blue berries for a dessert. At the moment I feel veggies are awful in most stores, because of lack of water. Like it or not I'm buying frozen because I'm tired of eating various shapes, sizes and colours of peppers.

What's the point? This is all doom and gloom! Would much rather see a report on a low price in a named shop than a load of high prices in named shops - that would save me time finding the low prices.

I like Sah, it is expensive, I am not rich, I shop there on occasion for products I can't find anywhere else but I know it costs more. I could always go South and buy those products there but then there is the car insurance, the fuel, the inconvenience of not being an EU citizen and having to spend time at crossing points to get there and back - just not worth it to me.

I also like Erulku but that is taking life in hands going over the mountain roads so only do that rarely. All in all, these days prices fluctuate by the second instead of the minute - next week they will rise again as the minimum wage committee starts to publish news. We can't win as it is a sellers market.

Off topic slightly but i asked a fish monger guy do we get salmon from turkey as i saw they are a big producer..

He has a shop in nicosia and does wholesale. He told me yes they get some like once a week and sell it for c half the price of other imported salmon. Told me it tastes the same...ive never seen it where i live...

Bonkers ..

Hürdeniz in Alsancak does bring in Karadeniz salmon at 4 pm on a Wednesday which IMO is better and cheaper than Norwegian although you do need to buy the whole fish. I get them to filet it which I then cut up and freeze in portion sizes.

I think that he still operates in premises behind what used to be 'Bells frozen foods' in Kervanseray - between Alsancak and Karaoğlanoğlu.

That's where I remember him being, we used to go there for cod. He was the only one with a licence to sell frozen fish back in the day.

Another alternative for freshly caught fish might be the Fisherman's Market at the little fishing harbour not far from Silver Rocks in Lapta - I've no idea of the opening times, before you ask!
