rockpeppler, same here. Rush like mad to get home as the batter soon starts to go a bit chewy. Best to eat on site.

I thought that was the basic price, cos I don't ask for small or large just .........................F and C plus mushy peas.

I'm with you there - I've never had a "small" fish and chips from Lokman!

To be honest when its a take away I just ask for one portion of fish because the chips would feed the five thousand in any case.

Food can be so subjective. I was the original poster, we gave it a try. Probably the wort meal we have had in a long long time. When we entered, no menu, the guy shouted over "fish chips and peas"? We said " yes, can I have curry sauce instead of the peas? No problem. When the meal arrived after 30 minutes the chips were well overcooked could only eat half, the fish was OK at best, the curry sauce was very thin.
We asked for the bill, we were charged 140 extra for the curry sauce, 280 for a pint and a half of efes, the total bill almost 1900 TL!! Never again.

MTC,
Yes agree eating out is very subjective, but never understood the rave reviews about this place; been 3 times and the chips always taste re-cooked, the fish quite strong IMHO, and the surly owner frankly.
Have you tried the 'Chippy' in Catalkoy (previously Crispy Squid)? Been several times since it reopened and very nice- once the fish was not the same; owner appreciated the feedback, explaining he alternates between 3 suppliers and would revert back to his other one: he clearly had as it was great the next time. Mind you it is a nightmare running a restaurant here with suppliers frequently substituting fish which is not what he ordered as he explained to us.

We have not tried the one in Catalkoy but heard some great reviews. Also the food lodge has some great feedback, will try both.

Like Keith we always asked for small fish but were always given large pieces and too many chips, although they are more like wedges than chips! So have now given up Lockmans . Living in Alsancak it is a bit awkward to travel to Catalkoy for decent fish and chips so maybe they could open another shop on this side of town and show Lockmans how to do it properly.

MTC are you sure its Food Lodge you are referring to, that is a Bakery on the main road.... The Lodge is at the side of the old Tempo going toward the Omar Tomb.... Just to stop any confusion

Fish & Chips? Hmmm, probably the most subjective meal ever! I think it depends on where you hail from originally. Personally I hail from the North East of England - the area for proper fish & chips, in newspaper of course. Those times have passed due to all sorts of different laws price restrictions so where do you find your "Best" fish & chips in a land that is not known for them really? In our 18 years here we found that Crispy Squid could not be beaten for taste and quality, sadly building rental costs, fish import costs and the need to have a future which had a more permanent income forced them to close. We took to Lockmans and have never had bad fish & chips at that establishment nor have we ever had cause to complain about prices - only the size of the chip portion has always been far to large for us to consume. Have tried all the bars and restaurants that either do fish & chips as a special or as a permanent fixture on their menu - non have really come up with the goods for us. Now we have fixed on one fish & chip establishment that has never failed to exceed our expectations, although many would not go there due to distance and personal reasons. In todays market the difference between a good meal, mediocre meal and a poor meal is not based on the price of the meal at all, nor on the distance covered to obtain it. We do not go out often but when we do we do not wish to be disappointed!
So, if you want a fish & chip recommendation then mine is simple - go South to Dhekelia, although not on a Sunday as it is closed then and does not open till 11:30 on all other days. Simple transit through the border into the SBA area (Pergamos/Beyamudu/Dhekelia - whichever name you know it by) a drive down to Dhekelia beach, visit Lambros Fish & Chips there. Can be very busy between 12:00 and 13:30 but service always good and possibly the best fish & chips you will have in Cyprus. They even beat the fish & chips I used to get from The Goldfish in Limassol in 1969 - but that is another story - lol. If you go early then visit the Lidl in Ormidea on your way as well, bargains to be had there, then if still early hop into the CESSAC cafe next door to Lambros for a coffee, it is open to all not just the military! Stuffed after lunch? Stay around the beach there and enjoy the day and the shallow, clean sand bottom of the bay for an hour or so before wandering back home. Make a day of you hunt for a good fish & chip meal. Good luck and enjoy yourself, it's why you came here after all!!

Thanks for the recommendation Waddo. Silly question maybe, but do you need a TOM and insurance to drive to Lambros and if so is it possible to get both at the crossing?
Thanks

Smiler, When you pass through the SBA checkpoint all they ever ask for is your passport - however, I have never tried to go South through any of the vehicle gates without a TOM and Insurance (Never been that lucky in life). You can ONLY get a TOM from the Metahan gate crossing point and it is wise to get your insurance there as well. You can get insurance at Beyamudu but it depends if the office is open. Sometimes it is and sometimes it is not.
I have at times passed through via Metahan and picked up my TOM and insurance then driven down to Dhekelia via Larnaca and come back via Beyamudu, nice easy run and if you head for geçitkale then tatlisu the roads are normally empty as well. I will also admit to forgetting about the TOM at times when passing into the SBA, so long as I have my insurance - lol.
Have been going to lambros constantly since 2007 and never had any problems with my car at all - you must have been really unlucky that day!!

100% you need TOM and insurance, I know two cases of people being stopped and then taken to court for not having them - but I also know people who cross regularly with neither (insurance not valid without TOM) and have never been stopped. Hopefully the recent rumours of UK passport holders getting longer TOMs will come true and make life easier.

Got to admit that I have both TOM and Insurance for both cars and keep them both valid - BUT - just how valid is a TOM for a 3rd country national (Ex EU citizen due to Brexit) when it is given for longer than 1 day at a time? Not saying that either of my TOM's are valid for longer than a single day but I never go via Metahan anymore due to the frequency of Police checks and even though the TOM issued may be more than 1 day and issued by the Government Department - the Police take great delight in tearing it up and saying I need a new one!!! It is a game for the Greeks to play that costs them nothing and just causes other people hassle, so I try to avoid hassle points and still stay within the law. You pays your money and takes your chance.

Saltys tried that! Not enough business, if you want it you will make the journey. Only chains seem to be able to do it Ezic etc. Every visit to Lefkoşa it's Mr Toastie and if later the cafes by eroluku.
I gather the bigger chips are called London chips,I always ask for skinny chips.
