BREAKING: Two Iranian missiles launched towards Cyprus

UK Defence Secretary John Healey confirmed the two Iranian missiles were fired in that direction but intercepted before arrival—no damage, casualties, or strikes on the British bases (Akrotiri/Dhekelia).

He also said this...

We don't believe they were targeted at Cyprus, but nevertheless, it's an example of how there is a very real and rising threat from a regime that is lashing out widely across the region, and that requires us to act.'

The bases’ authorities also instructed personnel to “remain in place and await further instruction”, warning that “there may be additional impact”, with the explosion and siren sounds having been heard in nearby Limassol.

Unconfirmed reports suggested that the drone which struck Cyprus may have been a Shahed 136 – a one-way attack drone which has been previously used both in Iranian strikes on Israel and by the Russian military during its war with Ukraine.

Earlier, the British bases had declared a “security threat” shortly before midnight.

Sources informed the Cyprus Mail that personnel at the base were told of the threat, and instructed to “return to your homes and stay inside until further notice”.

They were also told to “move away from windows and take cover behind or beneath substantial, solid furniture”, and to await further instruction.

The strike comes after politicians in the United Kingdom and Cyprus had offered contradicting accounts regarding the question of whether or not Iranian missiles had been fired in the direction of Cyprus on Saturday night.

Isn't it wonderful that France and the Greeks are coming to the aide of Britain and the RAF station. You never know, Starmer the Harmer might just make up his mind one day as to what he personally want to do. I was reading the mobile messages this morning between a local here and a friend who lives in Akrotiri village, they were doing the same thing, hunkering down until advised otherwise.

I don’t think Starmer has got any firm principles and will just go where he feels the votes are.
Labour have got themselves in a real pickle re the Muslim vote. It is so localised and large in areas that it controls several seats.
If you don’t pander to it you can potentially lose 30+ seats which might well be your future majority.

We (UK) don't have any money to get involved in this, Akrotiri has had no investment in the last 15 years, not many planes and rely on the Greeks for sea support. However, it's been announced this morning that HMS Duncan is "likely" to be deployed to defend the Akrotiri base. As for France, well he can, he has all the money we gave him to stop the illegal immigrants coming on boats to UK and he's done nothing about it....also makes him look good sucking up to whoever he can.

Rachel Reeves has refused to put more money in defence leaving a £28 billion shortfall in the Defence budget.

I also heard about HMS Duncan but there was an addendum in that it could be 5 days to make it "ready" and another 5 or six days to be in position. Agreed, this Government scatters our money around like confetti, and as an army and RAF "family" it always amazes me that our Navy has been virtually mothballed for so long. Defense of out country should be paramount at all time. One reputable political reporter also maintained there is a quite high proportion of Greek Cypriots who would love to see the closure of the camps and strongly object to them being there. I wonder why???!!!

Wake up, the Greeks have only ever wanted the SBA areas for their own protection! Now they see more land that they can grab they want the SBAs closed and given back to them! It’s all about money in the end. I would love to see the current Government in the UK just pack up and hand power back to the previous one that spent 15 years decimating the UK military and have conveniently forgotten that! It’s HMS Dragon that will limp its way over here, one of the three type 45s out of the total of six that the UK have. The other 3 are being refurbished! As ex RAF I feel sorry for our Navy and sad that our once powerful Army has been reduced down the years to its current size but that’s all politics and money as well!
No matter how hard the past, you can always begin again.

Waddo, I wonder why?? was very much tongue in cheek. Sorry I meant Dragon, but isn't there an HMS Duncan somewhere in the pipeline. I don't think the US will hand over their involvement in the Troodos in a hurry though will they. ?

I doubt if both warships will be deployed to Cyprus. The UK simply cannot afford to do that. Starmer and Reeves both know that.
Starmer is just sitting back hoping it will all be over by the time Dragon is ready to sail. I doubt if their is any part of Churchill in him

Looks like the Dutch are going to help out as well. I heard Spain mentioned yesterday p.m but nothing this morning. Tanky, if that is the case, then Dragon will need to be re(refit) because maintenance was being carried out order to work in Icelandic waters.

According to David Lammy this morning both ships will go when they are ready. Meanwhile Wildcat helicopters equipped with anti drone missiles have landed in Cyprus today. No one in UK is under any allusion that this has all been an embarrassment for UK but it's been many years of neglect to invest any monies in Defence. Also wherever land, sea or air support is coming from it's those men and women from all countries that are now having, potentially, to risk their lives. Yes let's hope it will be over soon.

Totally agree, just think how much money has been spent on railways lines that only go half way to their planned destination, have cost tens of millions more than estimated and nearly 10 years more than planned and take 15 mins off travelling time. Spending millions importing gas and coke when UK has its own, closing steel works down and then import the stuff, costing millions. , instead of defending Ukraine a country which is bleeding us dry. Won't go on as I get so angry with the waste of money which should have been spent on UK defense. I haven't even bothered to mention illegal immigrants. There is no point.
