Why Japanese imports are usually cleaner than UK imports
This is something many people ask me, especially customers moving to North Cyprus from the UK.
Of course there are good and bad examples from every country, but generally speaking, Japanese imports often arrive in much better condition than equivalent UK cars.
A few reasons why:
1. Climate and road conditions
Japan does not use road salt as heavily as the UK in many regions, so underneath corrosion is usually far less severe. Many UK vehicles suffer from rust underneath, especially around suspension and subframes.
2. Japanese owners maintain cars very well
In Japan, servicing standards are generally very high. Many owners follow strict maintenance schedules and keep vehicles extremely clean inside and out.
3. Short ownership cycles
Many Japanese owners change cars quite frequently, meaning vehicles are often sold while still in excellent condition.
4. Strict inspection system (Shaken)
Japan has a very strict roadworthiness inspection system called “Shaken.” As vehicles get older, costs increase, so many owners sell their cars earlier rather than keeping them long term.
5. Auction grading system
One of the biggest advantages with Japanese imports is transparency. Most vehicles go through professional auction inspections where:
* mileage is verified
* accident history is noted
* repairs are marked
* interior and exterior condition is graded
This makes it much harder to hide a vehicle’s true condition.

One thing many customers notice immediately is how clean Japanese interiors usually are. Seats, dashboards and trims often look years newer than equivalent UK cars.
