Was saddened to hear of the death of Ann Widdecombe this morning. Totally shocked to find that the poor woman has been murdered. I hope they catch the absolute b responsible. She was a rare breed amongst politicians and prepared to stand against her party for what she thought was right. Todays lot aren't fit to tie her shoelaces. RIP Ann, you will be much missed.

White British national male has been arrested. (I do wonder if colour would have been mentioned if it wasn't a white Brit?)

It wouldn’t, but the suspect has been released without charge and they are still looking for the perpetrator

I do hope that they have the right man this time. Police say not to speculate, which I am not, as we simply do not know what happened, or what was the motive. What I don't appreciate is, police practically immediately ruling out political or terrorist involvement, and still continuing in that vein when they let first suspect go, and second one apprehended. They may well be right, and need a specialist group to deal with the investigation, or have been overruled by govt to use such. I'm just absolutely sickened that a 78 yr old woman who was so full of life, and still had plenty of go in her, came to such a brutal end.

It's just being released now that Ann Widdecombe was killed in a targeted attack, so political, said by the Counter Terrorism police.

Yes saw that yesterday Dalartokat, thank you. The police made stupid statements twice, and far too early on in investigation, should have kept their mouths shut.

To me it's unimaginable how any human being has the capacity to hit another on the head with a hammer - let alone 21 times!!! With the sheer pain and fear Ann must have had at the time, I sincerely hope she died after the first blow and she didn't suffer. I met Ann several times in my Young Conservative days in the glorious 80's, as well as Mid Kent MP Andrew Rowe and Medway MP Dame Peggy Fenner and despite what some might consider to be Ann's outspoken views on various subjects, she was high up among the nicest and most sincere of people I have ever met and I consider having known her a great privilege. I have fond memories of Ann and I will certainly miss her.

I can only agree with you MnM. I just can't get over how serious the assault was, it's just horrendous. I do hope that she died straight away, the thought of anything else is just too much. Although I didn't always agree with her, I much admired her outspokenness, and you knew exactly where she stood. Never met her unfortunately, but everyone who met her has said what a kind and generous person she was.

At least now the despicable coward has been charged. I hope he comes up against other inmates his own size when he's inside. I'm sure there'll be plenty that will want to come up against him.
