Friends of ours recently went to the harbour for an English breakfast, £24, yes £24, simply outrageous!! It will be a while before they go again.

Let's face it, the harbour restaurants have always been expensive compared to other locations. Not always good food either. It's a tourist place, they know that even if you eat there again it's very unlikely they will get you back to the same restaurant, so all the graft is added to your first visit.
To the restaurateurs, here's no fool like a tourist paying for a view...
We warn friends that they can expect to pay well over the the odds and let them choose whether the ambiance merits the fleece.

Just get a bacon sandwhich in the pubs up the hill..fair comment groucho..
I had breakfast in a restaurant attached to grand sapphire last year not great about the same price it is what it is. Even the cheaper cafes offering this have to factor in the price of the limited ingredients available.

Yes, harbour restaurants have always been expensive, but paying £24 for breakfast is a bit steep. I do wonder about tourists going for an English breakfast, would think they would prefer to try local stuff for a change. Can understand folk living here having a bit of a yearning every now and then. Think I have become too localised.

Well prices will not go up 16.95% we all know that, more like 20/25% at least,
BUT be warned looking at the number of shops that are empty and restaurants that are fighting to get customers to come in, an economic disaster is on its way.

I only visit periodically.
What is it like on the ground with tourism.
Tourists are price sensitive. If they don't get good value they don't come back, they go elsewhere.
Locals, if they see prices rising, just stay at home.
So businesses get fewer and fewer customers, so charge them more and more, then they get fewer and fewer customers.
I'm glad I don't live there permanently and it might be getting to the point where the apartment I have had for over 20 years, hits the market.
I might just do what lots of people are doing and go elsewhere!!

We had a villa in North Cyprus for several years but found travel costs were increasing with unsociable flight times. Other costs also were increasing. We sold up and bought a place in a lovely area in Tenerife La Laguna. All our costs are very reasonable and eating out costs much less than the UK. We get flights for between £40 and £60
We do miss Cyprus but do not regret the move

It's all very sad, unfortunately a lot of businesses do not think bottoms on seats but the same profit they used to get.
Rent in sterling must be an absolute killer to any business here. How do they budget for rate changes?

TRNC should make it compulsory for all contracts to be fixed TL rate based on exchange rate at time of signing. The TL currency is state currency. I know it's not what lots of businesses in the TRNC have to buy in but such a measure would help to dent the constant creep based on volatility.
Have the courage to ban contracts in other currencies.
Not crypto... ban all smoke and mirror deals... the sh1t hitting fans... is coming, when investors in fictional 'value' realise the risks don't add up to profits for all. You only need to look at the dodgy shifty characters promoting the snake oil ....

Nobody will buy to invest ..Collapsing the housing market further is not a great idea.theres already 25000 unsold houses..all the developers will go bust and the jobs and taxes with it..who will.pay the.governments salaries then...
They have that in turkey but people find ways round it..shadow pricing side deals and huge renewal increases occur rents dont get any cheaper...theres not enough demand here from foreign buyers compared to turkey which they need..its more difficult to sell houses in an unrecognised country with contested ownership...
They already apply soft capital controls with higher taxes for foreign rents if they imposed tl rents investors would flee. Your thinking of this in only 1 direction.

Another point is many rents are already paid up front for contract..that would become more prevalent to completely remove currency risk. Thats whats happened in turkey. Then at renewal they just hike the price to cover any currency depreciation. It makes it even more difficult for business owners as nobody will offer monthly payments.
