Coming from Girne go straight through the Bellapais traffic lights then at the new harbour roundabout go right and it is on the right hand side , well lit up you can't miss it!!
Alternatively if you go 'through' the Lemar store it would be on your left, it is the same road as Monex exchange is in.

Salties fish and chips is in Karakum, by the big roundabout, if you pass Lemar and Bookseller on the left with Kibbet Steak House on the right, it is just a little further down on the left with parking spaces in front.
We went last night for just a take away meal and parked in front of Bookseller and just walked down to it.
The cafe inside has been beautifully decorated with a nautical theme running through it and we felt it was very cosy and warm.
Her-in-doors had the battered haddock and I had scampi, both with chips.
The fish was lovely and well cooked but unfortunately, due to first night nerves we think, the chips had been hurried and were very undercooked, soft on the outside but hard potato still on the inside.
We will be back for more as we are sure any teething problems such as this will be sorted as they gain in confidence and skill.
Good luck to them in their new venture. {Yes, we could have gone back and complained but did not want to spoil the atmosphere for them of their first nights opening, just because of a few chips!]

When we were in NC in December work was taking place on this building, we had a chat with the Boss and asked him what it was going to be and was told it was going to be a "Chippy", he did say it was a new venture for him as he is a builder and his aim was to cater for locals as well as ex-pats, must say the work they were doing was first class. He also said he had heard the place across the road from him which was being renovated was going to be a Gloria Jeans coffee house.

Soner, have you tried frozen Mars Bars? Delicious.

I don't mean the sickly, disgusting ice cream version, just ordinary Mars.

Did anyone notice if they did chicken nuggets? Could not see it on the board, but was a fleeting visit. Plus did anyone else have undercooked chips?

Definitely going to pay this place a visit, probably tomorrow if they are open.

As I have never, ever had one of those Mars bars cooked, then I will try one of those as well.

Could do to put on a pound or two!

Yusuf is the owner and yes he and his wife are from the Ozankoy restaurant. The price is 18TL for fish and chips. Yusuf certainly knows how to cook fish and chips and any problems that happened on the first night will soon be sorted.

crofters.

Ref saltie fish and chips.

Yusuf is employed by a British chap called Mark who has put all the cash into salties.
Mark is a builder who is well known in the TRNC.
He is also a keen boat fisherman hence the decore.
I have known Mark for many years.
Hope this puts the record stright.

As I said in an earlier post we were talking to the men working on the shop, the man in charge said he was a Builder and he was taking a gamble putting his money into this new venture, we commented on the decor it is lovely, he said he wanted to cater for the locals as well as ex-pats and would get as much variety of fish he could including Cod.

We had a take away from Salties on Saturday, the fish was yummy. My comments to the owners would be the time we had to wait, it was over half an hour, though I am sure this was just opening teething problems, and the portion sizes, they were OK for Mrs Sparky, but not enough for me. Maybe increase portion size or like in the UK chip shops offer large size portions? I will be going back as it was best fish and chips for a long time, I hope this is taken as a positive comment.

As I mentioned in my post, Yusef is employed, Mark is the owner.
I agree Yusef is good at making fish & chips, this is what he did in the UK.

Have to agree with all the positive remarks re: Salties.

I'm not the greatest lover of fish and chips but hubby is!

Went on tuesday with 2 friends and have to say the cod was the best I have ever had.
Batter was light and crispy and the chips were very good.

Owner was very friendly and came over for a chat.
Loved the decor, very tasteful.

Hope they do well.

Had lunch there yesterday for the first time. The Calamari was definately different as was not rings which come out of a packet but big thick pieces in the most beautiful batter and so tender. We had to wait a while but that is a good indication that the food is made fresh. Will be sure to return.

Went tonight. Well it is nice. No I wasn't impressed and my husband either. He got the cod, and I got the Haddock (sp). To me they looked n tasted the same. but no difference they were the same price, and the 2 most expensive items on the menu. there is a menu at the side and I realized oh that is the take-away menu..... its the same as the dine-in menu. since we wanted to try it we sat down. we got served 3 slices of sandwich bread and 3 butter(cups). (I kind of wish there was more bread 'cuz it was good to have something to munch on while we waited for our meal; and i had butter left over.) I was looking at the menu and i realized hey there is a difference in price: take away is 14TL and dine in is 22TL ( i was mad that we didnt look carefully before, that extra 16TL could have gone to something way more important and useful.) we waited about 20 minutes (+/-); the food was good served with fries (chips) and mushy peas . but again it wasn't a WOW factor for me- sorry. I did ask about a To-Go menu and "next week" was the response of the serious lady that waited on us. I remember the battered mars bars (normal size) 4TL. pineapple fritter 3TL. .... well thats my experience. everyone who goes, ENJOY!

So now we have three prices for the fish and chips at Salty's? I am sure someone wrote 18 TL, then somone else said 22 TL if you sit, and 14 TL for take away... I think fish and chips in Cyprus at 18 TL takeaway is a bit too sharp! Maybe I should pay a visit tonight and find out myself...

A family of four who decide on take away food would need to spend 64 TL, when alternatively they can buy 3 döner kebabs for the price of 1 fish and chips across the road from 2 kebap places, or pay another 10 TL and buy Chinesee or maybe Indian take away, enough for 4 people.

The price of fish & chips in UK varies between 3.00 and 5.00 stg (from fish shops) - with plenty chips! UK average is around 3.50 - which is just over 9.50 TL based on average current exchange rates over the past few months. Below is a table of current prices in UK:

Suffolk £2.50
London £5.00
Newcastle £3.00
Sunderland £2.50
Cheltenham £4.87
Llaneli £4.20
Surrey £4.80
UK Average £3.30

No need to be so rude Mr/Ms "newby"! You must be working there - are you? You seem to get offended when no offensive language was used!

Perhaps if you do not like the discussions here, you should go advertise yourself somewhere else! This is a discussion form, where people are free to discuss related matters on any topic! That includes market prices for all produce and opinions on supermarkets, clubs, hotels, restaurants, bars etc. I do not need advice from you on where to go or where not to go! If I do then I shall start a topic asking for help. If I do not like the price, the taste or the service then of course I shall go somewhere else!

People are free to express their opinions on a topic in any forum and expressing my opinion is my right (providing I do not use offensive language). As an online marketing manager I had done EPR using hundreds of discussion forums, and know exactly what the behaviour or the kind of characters that show their heads in these forums - so please go argue with someone else! Preferably somewher else - because people in this forum are very friendly and not offensive when posting replies.

When talking about the price of something, I compare "value for money" in terms of effort put in cooking, the taste, and the "fill factor" (i.e. whether I feel full up after paying so much for a meal). Usually it is best to try something yourself because everyone's tastes are different. Hence, why I said "Maybe I should pay a visit tonight and find out myself.."

The price comparison refered to all fish and chip shops in/around Girne, since everyone in this forum who had their fish and chips know they are more expensive than this new place anyway. But thanks to your silly comments, I think I shall give this place a miss and advise everyone else around me to do so too - there is a good choice of fish and chips shops around Girne!

How you can say my comment was rude is beyond me! The tone of your post was that the prices at Salty`s are prohibitively high in comparison to prices in the UK.I disagree with you , but because I do, you deem me to be posting offensive material. The mind boggles!

And now you are advising all who you know not to go there. How very sporting of you, even though you haven`t been yourself. No, I don`t work there,or have any interest in the business, but I have been, and enjoyed the food I bought.Don`t think there are any Cod swimming in the Med, so having imported said fish, cooking it and serving it in their new establishment,I think 14TL for a portion is a fair price.Apologies if you deem this to be an offensive post, but as you stated, this is a free forum, and EVERYONE is entitled express their (non-offensive) views.

If you believe telling people you do not know from Adam what to do, when they are making a fair comment is not rude, then I beg to differ!

To help any "boggling mind" please read my post carefully. The only price referance to Salty's was made when expressing we now had three different prices (info. from other posters) for their fish. And as you say, if 14 TL is the take away price - I think that is really good price compared to others. As for your comment above - I never said anything about Salty's being prohibitively high compared to UK! I compared the prices of fish & chips shops in Cyprus in general. I reiterate exactly what my post says above: I think fish and chips in Cyprus at 18 TL takeaway is a bit too sharp!
and I stand by my opinion.

As you may well know the standard price for fish and chips in Cyprus is around 18-20 TL, and I personally think that is not a fair price! I love fish&chips but with a family of 4 everytime I suggest having some, I lose out because everyone else insists we are better off going to Eziç restaurant, a kebap house, or even an Indian for the same price! Understandably, they say they are never full up with Fish & Chips. The price of frozen fish in Cyprus is not much more expensive than the fresh ones in UK, neither is the price of potatoes. The rent for a shop on a main road is not more expensive either. So without victimising any establishments here, what is the reason for such a difference in price?

If the two of you bought fish & chips take away in UK for a meal, would you be paying the same money for sitting and eating in an Indian restaurant or a kebap house? Can they buy 4 kebab takeaways for the same money? Excuse me but I think people in Cyprus are taken for a ride by those who want to see very good return on their investment i.e. become rich in a year! That is why most expensive places for food or drinks are like falling stars, opening up and closing or transfering ownership all the time - unless of course you are in the vicinity of the Harbour with endless supply of tourists and/or visitors. Not many TCs actually eat in any restaurants in the Harbour! If a restaurant intends to "address the local residents" then the price policy must follow suit - just like Many local kebap houses, Indian restaurants, Eziç and Burger King or Chicken Planet do!

Cont. fom above...

Finally, you may be interested in hearing two small kebap houses opposite Karakum Lemar (near İktisat Bank). They sell the cheapest, most generously filled chicken and beef döner kebaps tasting better than any other kebap place in Girne! They are like bee hives from 11 am until 8 pm in the evening - both the owners are laughing all the way to the bank - and so they deserve to! The moral of the story is, if you are claiming doing favours for local public then, sell for less but sell a lot more because most can afford to buy then! The profits at the end of the day will always be a lot more and you would be doing the public a service. People may or may not agree with that.

As for myself? Money is of no consequence - I love the Bursa Kebap in Ankara (Opera region) so much that on at least 4 occasions over the past 3 years, I flew there for a day trip just to eat the stuff and when in UK I used to fly myself and my partner (in a light aircraft) to Le Touget in North France some weekends just to eat the delicious stakes they used to make and buy cheese & baugettes... Would I do it for fish & chips or burgers? To be honest NO! I would it them anywhere where they taste reasonably good at the right price

just saying, BigOZ, I agree with you. As for me Money is a consequence; If I am paying a lot, then the food better be good and satisfying. Like I mentioned before the extra 16TL could have gone to something more important. My husband also thought the prices were too much and he wasn't satisfied Oh well, have try every/somethings at least once to learn.
