Can anyone advise me of the way to treat this,is there a pre paint treatment or an all in one fungicidal paint?
Should we wait for the summer months?
There is no damp in the house just two ceiling areas with mould and it is getting worse,thanks

check that you dont have a water leak from the roof. Dettol mould spray will bleach it out.

You can kill mould with white spirit vinegar, OK the place will smell like a fish and chip shop for a bit but it's the best way....

We've tried the Dettol Spray and white Vinegar and find the Dettol spray to be better. You can then paint with anti-mould paint. However make sure you don't have a water leak which will need dealing with first. We have mould occasionally in the one of the bathrooms which is caused by steam from showers on a cold outside wall that NEVER gets any sun in the winter months. It helps to keep bathroom door open a few inches when showering.

All the suggestions above are good and worth trying however I would also suggest that you wait until the rainy season has passed before attempting any work to let it dry out properly.

Also you can buy special rubberised paint from Tayf which, once your walls/ceilings have dried out, put on the outside to help prevent the damp getting in again.

Most mould that is not from leaking roofs (a problem that would be much more extensive) is caused by condensation of warm, moist air rising to the top and condensing. The moisture is largely caused by human breath.... so stop breathing!

Kill the mould with neat bleach and paint the walls will fungicidal paint you can get it here, and most importantly get some VENTILATION in the rooms (fit some vents) make sure the air is CIRCULATING and you will not get this problem, most mould is purely down to poor ventilation in the house/rooms and fairly simple to fix.

I leave the window open even when it is very cold but I also leave the bathroom door open about 10cms. when I shower. The big landing does not seem to be affected by this so I think it is simply a matter of a lot of steam in too small a space. Have never had mould since doing this.

The best thing is to stop it happening. Can you describe where it is?

As mentioned the only place we have trouble with is 1 en-suite, when finished I leave the windor open and shut the door which lets it dry out.

It would be wise to check that there is no sign of damp in the space between the roof and the ceiling otherwise (particularly if it is an old house with timber beams, and/or there is no air circulation in the roof space you could get rot problems).

Thank you for all your comments so far. The mould is on the upstairs ceilings on the landing which isn't too severe but very bad in our bedroom. I have tried the dettol spray and it does work on the fainter marks but the very dark and large areas in the bedroom won't come off. I think I'll treat all the areas anyway with the dettol then wait till the weather improves to paint over it. We have a flat roof which we painted last November using a waterproofing paint so it shouldn't be down to a water leak, just condensation as suggested.

It only needs a small gap on a flat roof for the rain to go underneath and then it will cause that problem.

if you are convinced that the leak is fixed it can only be condensation which also means this ceiling is particularly cold. If you have room you could put in a 4" drop ceiling with some rockwool in between which will stop this happening and also help keep your house warm.

when doing the bleaching, make sure you are well covered, gloves and face mask etc.... as the spores can lead to all sorts of allergies on your skin. I am speaking from experience, as I ended up with a nasty itchy rash.

After 2 days with the Dettol spray it's all looking 90% better, thanks again for all comments.
