I wish I knew timefore. I have three small(ish) dogs and am getting beyond weeding by hand and have already had sadly to increase the amount of hard surfacing in my garden to reduce it.
Meantime can I just take the chance to remind people that a lot of household or garden chemicals are poisonous and need to be kept out of the reach of pets - as well as children of course.

I have doubts about pet safe weed killers. Even one marketed in the UK as being pet safe has been reported as being responsibe for the deaths of several pet dogs.

Also salt, but if you use salt, it can kill anything in the ground, for a long time, so don't use it if you want to grow flowers there one day.

Good suggetion Stella. Salt would at least be suitable for cracks in paving etc. provided one took care not to overdo washing down and wash it onto surrounding plants. Also good for some pests - slugs and snails - where the commercial products are also poisonous for dogs.
