BRS Blood Donor Day Sat

The banners are up telling everyone there is a chance to donate blood for the Blood Bank at Girne Hospital this Saturday. If you dont know if you CAN donate, or if you do not know your blood group - go along, they will test your blood and let you know how rare/ordinary your blood is, and if you are a suitable donor. Unfortunately the rules here are not the same as UK, so some regular donors from UK are ineligible here, at the moment!! And remember, at the moment if you have 3 donations in a year, and are under 60, you do not need to have a blood test for residency (apart from the first one) so come along - you can spare a unit, I am sure and will be welcomed with open arms!!

thanks Mamavampire! If I shake off this rotten cold, I will give a drop of my special red stuff - but not an armful a-la-tony Hancock style. A unit is so much easier. And if I haven't got rid of the rotten cold I will take photos of the generous souls who can give an 'armful'.

and hope everyone realises that this is blood for all - any nationality , any need - innit????

AND THE TIME IS?????????????is it 10a.m. to 1p.m. or what? Help!

I think it is once every four months or thereabouts, assuming you are fit and well and not on unacceptable medication. also if you should prove to be an extremely rare blood group, then talk to Prue before you actually give blood. There is a reason for this.

If the info I have given you is incorrect, then Prue can shoot me with her little BRS gun, but I know at the moment she is busy shooting 'bugs' - the flue virus variety!

Basically people on BRS donor data base are have three months between calls!! In other words once every three months - and you can choose to go to one of the advertised donor days or just call in at Girne or Lefkosa Blood banks and donate when it suits you. This applies to the under 60's who have to have blood tests for residency - as long as you do three in a year and one is within a month of applying for residency you dont need to have/pay for another one - so if within the month you want to apply, there is not an official session, you can go with your card to either of the Blood banks instead, or if karpaz way - to Famagusta hosp I believe

so no excuses for not giving! It helps save a life, it can save the under 60's money (for blood test for residency), you get a free cuppa and a bikkie, you get a smile from Prue and you meet some lovely generous hearted people.

Can;t think of a better way of spending a Saturday morning hour in the heart of Kyrenia!

So who will I be seeing there?

and just think you could help someone to live - come on folks. do your bit.

I can't make Saturday so where are the blood banks around Girne I can go to. If it's the first time to give blood, do you have to go anywhere in particular or do anything different?

There is a new facility at Girne Hospital for giving blood - and any blood will be tested - so if it is your first time they will make sure it is ok. Or if it is easier to go to Lefkosa, then again go to the Blood Bank, I believe it is signposted after you go through the gates at the hospital and they will take some from you! Contrary to what the SMS many of us have had, the cut off age here is 65 not 70 - unlike UK. Efforts are being made to persuade the govt that they should follow suit - as healthy donors over 70 are now ok in uk if they have been regular donors to that age. Believe it was actually said that the over 70's in a lot of cases were healthier than the youngsters!
