After the BBC showed footage of Northern Cyprus in a news feature on the ROC bank crisis, now the Mail Online have gone and got it wrong too by including a photograph of Kyrenia Harbour in their article http://www.dailymail.co.uk/debate/artic ... ftiko.html

Considering they have published travel articles about the North, you would imagine they might have a bit more of a clue?!

It is a nice picture though, and again only people in the know would know its Kyrenia Harbour
Obviously the idiot at the mail has never been to cyprus
But on behalf the brits in the south I think its an absolute disgrace that they should be taxed on there savings, I would imagine this will not do one bit of good, to the already divided relationship
Greece has the problem start taxing the greeks

Interesting that Mail reporters have been here - I met some soI know they are real - and doubly interesting that the Mail does not seem to ahve its archives properly sorted.

but it does my soul good (she says selfishly) to know that the Daily Mail can issue blunders as with its money and staff it should do better. Cyprus Star does really well I reckon with its little mistakes and very small staff (no rude comments please)

But I think this taking of money in the south is outrageous. it is theft! No other word for it. To tell people it is taking their money without any consultation is a diabolical negation of their human (and financial) rights.

it is good to see that the british government have frozen pensions so that folk living in the south receiving their well earned pensions do not have to pay 10% to a country that has allowed itself to be crippled, or even caused it. how thankful should we be that we are NOT a united island and in the same sickly euro boat.

Makes you wonder if people in other euro countries that are in trouble are thinking of getting their money out of the banks

according to a spokesman on the news today (one of those financial wizards) no other country is in danger, as Cyprus is 'unique' (as if we didn't know it), but nevertheless if I were in one of the other cash stricken countries, I might be getting worried. so does one believe the financial wizard, or will he be proved wrong.

I still maintain, as do others to whom I have spoken ) it is downright theft by the government.

What I find difficult to stomach,is that British troops who are there through NO CHOICE of their own,are to be taxed on their accounts aswell .What do others think?

Firstly, because somebody lives/works in South Cyprus it doesn't mean they will hold accounts there other than for incidental expenses.
Secondly, the UK government has already clearly stated that it will recompense all soldiers/diplomats etc. who are stationed there.

There will be employees of both UK and foreign companies resident there and caught by this problem, aswell as diplomats etc, from other nations (e.g. UN troops); but I would be very surprised if all weren't compensated by their employer/government.

Those that have chosen to live/invest there must take the lumps - just like those here who have suffered unexpectedly e.g. Kulaksiz, Robb victims.

That's a bit unmkind saying those who have chosen to live there must take the lumps. Why, might I ask? It is in the EU and therefore different standards are expected, and why on earth should those who have chosen to retire there and invest their money be penalised when government workers from U.K etc are helped. Also it seems unfair that laundered Russian money is treated the same as good honest folk whose money has been come by legally.

My own opinion is that you cannot compare with K5 and in any case they are being fought for to win their homes back. Who is fighting for the expats in the south who are being stolen from by the government.

Could not agree more Marion, if you are resident here JBA how would you feel if the TRNC parliment suddenly announced due to the cash stricken crisis of this country they were going to take 10% out of your savings, not good, and what right would they have!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I was stating a fact NOT expressing sentiment.

Nobody helped Robb or K5 victims, nor will they help independent people hit by this proposed bank theft in the South. I don't for 1 second think that it is right - but my opinion doesn't change the facts.
