Doe's anyone know if the GC border staff are stopping people crossing into North Cyprus to establish if they have in excess of 500 euros in cash on them. If they do then confiscating the money, all due to their recent financial problems.

I have posted a comment on another thread about this.
I had to go to the Greek side twice this week.
On our return here were two South side reg cars in front of me coming over the border to the North.
NO cars were stopped, but the Greek police have put notices at the border just as you are leaving the South, don't know what they say.
I have to return tomorrow again for medical reasons, I will post again if there is any change.

We came over the border last Wednesday and yesterday and neither time were checked. However, they may be more inclined to check ROC plated cars rather than TRNC plated cars.

Thanks for the info, am coming out soon via the South, and were warned that there was a GC campaign in place attempting the halt of euro's from the South into TRNC.

Just returned from the South, the Greek car in front was stopped by a guy in civilian cloths, he seemed only to ask a few questions.
there seemed to be two at the speed bump one was a lady in a dayglow jacket.
They didn't stop us.

So judging by that 'straw poll' of previous answers they are not checking and I assume the local banks here are doing great business at the moment!

We came back over around 20.30 last night, no checks, the guy in the GC box was not in uniform & did not even glance up from his desk.
Of around 8 cars we were the only TCs.

My friend says, if you are crossing with something to worry about, choose bad weather!!

Pergamos (Bayermunda) Crossing Point

There are no Greek Customs at this crossing. You go straight to Turkish Customs to crossover to TRNC. If you are bringing cash over, just stash it in the boot of the car...if checked it will only put a smile on the Turkish Custom Officers.

HI Soner.
At aprox 16.45 yesterday there were two people ( 1 male 1 female ) checking Greek cars as the left the Greek side.
The were both in civilian cloths so I don't think they were customs, the lady was wearing a dayglow jacket.
What they were asking the Greek driver I don't know, they never opened the car.

I read in the Cyprus Today midweek this week that residents in the South were being limited to bringing 300 Euros across the border and people not normally resident in the South but crossing the border in to the north were limited to 500 Euros.

But no mention that people were being stopped, interrogated or searched.

I wonder if, reading peoples comments here, that the article was just 'stirring' things up to worry people!

No i don't think it was meant to stir things up, as the info about how much money you can bring over the 'border' is freely available on the British Consulate website.

we have just got back from a weekend away in the South and had no questions asked or got interrogated at the border crossings, they didn't even look in our car - no probs at all. I think a lot of gossip is flying around as usual !

I do not believe there is any stirring going on.
Over the first few days after the rules came out it was made clear that the consequences would be harsh if people were caught and there was one story in the press, which I cannot be bothered searching out where money was found in a search.

Since then rules have been relaxed as people obviously could not get their cash out of the banks to remove it from the country. However, the strict rules are in place and if you are caught then...........I would suggest that people have not been stopped, or seen any searched, because they are not carrying any contraband nor is anyone else at that time. Does not mean that people are not being stopped and searched as at any customs and immigration post.

Do not worry if you are innocent.

Becker.

Thank you for your post.
I also have seen these two people at the border stopping GC cars as I have posted earlier.
But as always a lot of posters have claimed not to have seen anything and they think this is fact ??
What you see and at what time is worth reporting, it may not always be in place but what I saw was a check on a GC car at aprox 16.45 by two people, one a lady in dayglow jacket and one male in civilian clothes, there was also a stand with three notices (A4) as you leave the Greek side printed in light blue print.
I do not think any person with TC plates will be stopped.

cyprusishome.

Nothing to do with the casinos, they have no money to spend. 300 Euros a day only.

Of course they have money to spend. The people who come across know where and how to get as much cash as they want. We are not talking of the average working man who is totally stuffed by all of this as always, it is the business men, politicians etc who never loose out in these circumstances.

There is so much, dare I say fraud, gone on prior to the bust as shown by the Bank of Cyprus records mysteriously gone missing when the auditors went in. The top men will not be punished because of the system that operates at the top. You just have to look at HBOS in UK where a similar situation is happening.
