Advise please on returning goods

I recently bought a top from a local clothes shop.I wore it twice for a total of about 4 hours. The beading around the neck started to come undone and some of the beads were lost.
I took the top back and was told that because I had worn it and removed the shop tag I could not have a refund or credit note.
Now to me I would have to remove the shop tag in order to wear it,and if I didn't wear it how would I know that the beads were going to fall off.
Is it me or am I being fobbed off.

If it could be identified that you bought the item in that shop then I would have pushed the issue and demanded a credit note. Unfortunatley there is not a lot in the way of "guarantee" here. There is a consumer protection organization who you can contact, at present I do not know the number but they are very good. Try an on line search or try Buzz book.

This was posted in Feb 2012, so I am n ot sure how valid it is:

"Consumers Association is in the old quarter of Lefkosa. There is/was a local representative also working from the Grapevine restaurant in Girne. Contact Hasan Yilmazisik 0392 228 9520 or 0392 229 0790. He appears to be a very mild mannered person but once he has a grasp of the situation he is like a dog with a bone who has a good record of success as he seems to have swingeing powers and the ability to bring all businesses to heel when necessary."

Kaiserphil- that is good to know, thank you.
Does anyone know what their remit is -is it just for retail sales, or does it extend to other services ,such as trades people ,insurance and banking for example?
Also, Is It government backed, and does it have teeth?
