Is there an official Government web site that publishes the duty payable on importing a car into the TRNC.
Or do you have to obtain the cost in person from the customs office.

You could email Customs and ask, the reply you get will give you a price to import you car.
When you arrive in Cyprus for some reason the quoted details do not apply, they then will make it up as they go along and charge you double.

If your car is European the tax is a lot less than a car from outside the European Union, but it it it better to buy a car here that is tax payed.

To import a car it has to be under 5 years old, unless you have had the car from new.

I have just completed the importation of a Morris Minor - a classic car and I don't think the normal rules apply (if there are any!!). I went to the Customs Office and asked for an estimate of what the tax might be. I queried the amount which is supposed to bear some relationship to the purchase price - not much for a 50 yr old Morris!! - and was told they had to charge shipping tax even though I had driven it here!! I think Karmels is right - they have a figure in mind and that is what they charge you. I didn't receive any paperwork so I don't know how they derived the tax payable. You have to use an agent who deals with the Customs officials. I used a company with a handy office opposite the Customs Office, They should be able to give you a good steer - 0392 225 49 93.The process is frustating and for a new car - expensive. When you or your car arrives you will be given a yellow customs chit. This might be valid for 1 month only but can be extended if you go to the Customs Office. There is quite a hefty fine if you don't pay the tax or take your car out of the country by the expiry date - so beware!! There have been cases of cars being impounded - and then being driven around by Government officials!!!! Best of luck!!!!!!!!!

That is fine to import a classic car, but you need to be a member of the classic car club before you import, with the correct docs.
If you are living in the UK and are looking to move to the TRNC and have little information the classic car import information is not available to the normal person who would like to come and live in the North.
When a person asks a question about importing a car the information needs to be up to date, reading Cyprus 44 will not give anybody the correct information as it has been off line for over 3 years.
I am unable to post correct info on this, and I have lived here over 20 + years as the goal posts change with each Government, and I am sure you know what I mean genghis as we don't import cars anymore or maybe the classic.
I just hope MikeK who asked the question can derive a answer to the question from the posts that have been posted.

There are numerous threads on this site, have a check back on a couple of recent ones, just put car import or similar into search.

The problem is rules change regularly and costs can be arbitrary but expect to pay anything between 40% & 60% of book value by the time you have added up all the duties and taxes. Then add transport costs and you must consider how much it costs to buy here.

We bought our car over six years ago. It was probably worth £3.000. We'd had it for a number of years and the mileage was very low. It was hubbies pride and joy.
We did all the homework, and were told we would have to pay in the region of £5,000. They put the surcharge prices up two weeks before we were due to pay.They charge import tax and surcharge, log book and tax for a year. In the end it cost us in the region of £10,000.
Mmmmm, yes, a bit of an expensive car.
Think very clearly, is it worth it.?

Thank you all for your replies, I thought it would be something of a minefield, I shall try and get a response from the phone number but it would appear that any costs given may count for nothing when the car arrives at the docks if I decide to import!

the smaller the engine the less the tax a higher rate is charged on diesel and over 2000 cc
under 1.6 is the lowest rate but the weight of the car also effects the cost
I imported a 6 year old fiesta 1.25 for about £1600 4 years ago we had the car from virtually new
Take the log book to the import office and they will give you a price
Don't think about a 4x4 or a plus 2000 cc not worth it

The best way to get the accurate figure is to email a copy of the V5C and we'll get the caclulation for you. To get it right there's little point is saying what a similar vehicle cost a few months ago. We have to ask for each individual car.
Ro-Ro every 2/3 weeks from UK direct to Famagusta Port. Transit time 10 days. The next sailing will be at the end of April. Or containerised.
