There's a good DIY system on the internet which will only cost a max £750 the build, starting mine as soon as I have all the materials Being retired I have plenty of time and it's not rocket science

What Vaughan is offering is much different from what you mention. His is a fully automatic system which measures pool temperature and operates a fully automatic electronic valve which is about £400 on its own set into the pool pump circuit to top up the temperature to the set level. I had these system installed at two villas and it is just wonderful, the actual problem was getting the pool too warm which is disgusting!

The easiest way to heat your pool is to take your kettle outside and fill it up with pool water. Take it back in and boil the kettle, then pour it back into the pool..

Repeat the process until the pool is nice and warm. It's quite expensive and painstaking but it works!

Hi ham on brown.

It is our experience that these systems can add up to 20 weeks extra swimming time to the swimming season. This is in combination with the use of a pool cover. It is no use trying to heat a pool during the day (however you do it) and allowing it to cool overnight.

I can't see why we can't have solar power to work the pump, is this possible. Also can anyone tell me why a 1hp water pump for a house does not need a contactor yet a .75hp pool pump does.

You can have a solar powered pool pump, but you are confusing solar power with pV or photo Voltaic power.

A contactor is used to carry the pump motor current and protect the time-clock which switches it on.

I am not actually confusing anything, both are solar energy. One heats the water with solar energy, the other creates electricity using solar energy. The latter I would be more interested in.

I have always wondered about the purpose of the contactor, I know 2 pools that have time clocks and no contactor and other pools that have contactors. It only seems to be the contactors that are replaced! Hmmm

It is not difficult to do this conversion but it is expensive. You are talking thousands rather than hundreds. Like many energy saving systems they are expensive to buy but cheap (or free) to run. It will take you some time to get your money back.

For people who are off grid and liable to stay that way for some time, it can be the best way to run a pool.

Why not just get a few large coils of that black plastic pipe the farmers use place it on some black painted sheet metal in spirals on a south facing bank or roof small sub pump to push the water around in the day too simple to work and cover the surface in those round floats or is that too simple to work ?

You could! But you have to remember that it is recommended that you heat collectors should be between 40/60% of the pool surafce area, that is alot of pipe. Also you need temperature control as if it gets too hot it is revolting and if it runs when there is no sun or at night you are cooling the pool. Do not even think of a PV powered pool pump, it is thousands of pounds, we tried it.
