Such a pity they had to call Guzellyurt by the Greek name of Morphou though isn't it Same goes for calling Girne, Kyrenia.

Many Cypriots still call Kyrenia - Kyrenia

Also Nicosia is Nicosia, Famagusta etc.

Maybe one of our Cypriot members will correct me, or not, that they do not want Turkish imposed names.

Got used to the Turkish names now, only rarely use the old Greek/English names when trying to explain to Brits. Probably all TC's use the Turkish name, not heard any use the other names.

It would seem to me that most TCs refer to the major towns by their Turkish names. Indeed my in-laws even call Paphos by its Turkish name of Baf. However, the older TCs still refer to their villages by the old Greek names. For example, my 70-year-old father-in-law still calls his village of Şirinevler (just the other side of the mountains from Lapta) by its Greek name of Ayermola. His daughter though refers to it as Şirinevler.

Also, as Cyprusishome stated, there is also an element of TCs that resent Turkey's infuence over Cyprus, and do indeed make a point of calling all towns and villages by their original Greek names. Our dear friend, Yorgozlu, for example objects to calling his village by the Turkish name of Tepebaşı ... for him and others it will always be Diorios or Yorgoz.

But Cyprusishome, it is not true to say that the names of Girne, Lefkoşa, Mağusa and Baf were "imposed" by Ankara - long before 1974 the TC community were calling them by these names. For the record, Güzelyurt was given its name after 1974.

The map supplied in this article doesn't seem to be able to make it's mind up about the town names, Nicosia should be Lefkosia in Greek, Paphos s/b Pafos, Famagusta s/b Amochostos etc.

This week talked to our lawyer & builder both say Kyrenia & Nicosia. People in our village say Kyrenia and Nicosia and Lefkosa.......Friend who lives in Nicosia and Kyrenia..

Maybe there is a difference on if the TC has lived in UK and then returned.
One thing there is no consistency as far as I can tell. Maybe as Kyrenia is known as that worldwide it should remain as that.

Also over the centuries Nicosia/Lefkosa has changed between the two several times in varying spellings. New road signs have Kyrenia and Nicosia on them so what should we do......I know shrug our shoulders!!!
