Has anyone recently travelled by taxi from Ataturk Airport to Sultanahmet? If so what was the cost?

Also has anyone travelled by taxi from Sabiha Gokhen to Sultanahmet and what was the charge?

Many thanks.

You can book an online mini bus service for 15 euro per person our did not turn up
Saba Gorkin has a man who organises the taxis and he negotiated a fixed 80 ytl
When we returned we used a travel agent in Sultan Met @15 euro each
Its a long dribe and trafic can make a difference

It is easy enough to use the trams , then you don`t have to worry about traffic. Think from memory there is one change but you can check on line.

We used metro/tram - here is a good link telling you what to do http://www.turkeytravelplanner.com/go/I ... ahmet.html

should say that if there are a few of you then taxi isn't too expensive, if I remember correctly, and less hassle but agree a price before getting in the taxi. We just like trying out the different transport systems with the kids.

You get to see more of the area in a tram, plus if you see somewhere interesting , just get off at the next stop. Easy enough with the token system.

I have now found a taxi fare calculator:

It will be interesting to see if it works!!

We took a taxi from outside Topkapi Palace (where our hotel was) to Ataturk Airport (albeit just over 12 months ago) and paid 40TL. I just tried the taxi fare calculator on the same journey and it quoted 35.42TL so I would say it is pretty accurate. All the taxis are metred by the way.

Hi Squashmad

Last year we paid 40TL from Ataturk airport to Sultanahmet. There is a desk outside the main entrance where ALL taxis are despatched from and prices are set...... Turns out is was a reasonable rate for the journey too as when we returned from the hotel to the airport, we struggled to get a taxi to do it for the same price!!!

There are cheaper options as others have shown...............

As joandjelly stated all taxis are metered now, so you can be sure you are not being ripped off.

Haven't been for two years now so can't really comment. I agree the trams are just brilliant in Istanbul, but I wouldn't fancy it if loaded down with luggage. Younger and fitter, then we'd probably give it a go. What we found a bit odd, was the fair from Airport to Sultanahmet was lower than the reverse journey. by a difference of 10tl.

Thank you to everyone for their input.

Sophie, you hit the nail on the head, we don't want to be lugging cases around a public transport system at our ages - we would much rather get in a taxi, get to the hotel, off load and then begin exploring the delights of Istanbul!!

Sophie : I think the 10tl difference is because a one way street means going a longer route.

Dont the hotels do fre airport transfers now? I think the tram system is brilliant fo getting around but a bit tough if you have luggage or children etc.

Some hotels do have their own minibuses, they work out about the same cost as taxis but I do think its a lot safer in it than a small taxi, as everyone seems to drive and weave in and out of traffic at 100 miles an hour. I am sure our minibus was 65tl from Taksim to to the airport.
