Yesterday saw the unveiling of a plaque at the KAR vet clinic (which is not yet open !). As you may recall Soner kindly made a cash donation and KAR thanks go to him and to Kibcomers for their support .
Below is the speech, from yesterday, made by Chairperson Margaret Ray.

"We asked you here to view our new KAR Veterinary Clinic facilities and to the unveiling of this plaque which has been placed on the wall as a thank you to those that have contributed to this clinic.
Over two years ago after yet another rise in Veterinary prices causing a major drain on KAR financial resources and much deliberation on how we can cut costs, a dream of having our own veterinary clinic arose. A clinic to be used for the neutering and treatment of the dogs and cats found on the streets of Girne and surrounding areas as part of our neuter and release programme and in a bid to control the population of unwanted animals humanely.
Last November we moved into these new office premises in which a large open basement looked an idea place for the clinic and the dream began to become a reality. Money was raised for partitions to be built and a group of volunteers were formed to continue to raise funds, source equipment and promote the clinic. A very kind donation of 1,000 dollars from the Marchig Animal Welfare Trust paid for pieces of equipment and donations and support was rallied locally and from the UK. On the 1st April a delivery from the UK brought us medical equipment and supplies and gradually we have been putting together the clinic that you can see today. We have been advised that more equipment and supplies are on their way from the UK over the next few weeks.
Our next step is to employ a qualified Veterinarian and hopefully find some experienced volunteers to help in the clinic and then neutering operations can begin. We of course will need to continue to raise funds to finance the staffing costs and to purchase the medicines and supplies needed for the dogs and cats operations and treatments.
We have managed to reach this far thanks to all of you here today that have been working hard on this project and to those named on this plaque plus others who have given their support and very kind donations to make it all possible.
Thank you "

Yes, lovely event and I saw the plaque. But now I am 'angry with you' cos I have done a write up for tomorrow'spaper and it will be history, including lots of quotes from the speech! ah well!!! Seriously, not everyone who reads the Star is a KibKomer, although I reckon theyshould be.

|But what is now needed is more money and the vet they so desperatley need. If I were a qualified and retired vet, I would volunteer for nothing, but I guess one could say that the world does not need more than one me, but it could do with just ONE who feels the same as I and give their time and talents to KAR. Maybe there is someone out there who will supervise.

But all a wonderful step forward!

I admire all the work that KAR do and I hope their vetinary clinic is a huge success. However, I was recently asked to put a poster up in a local establishment, advertising an event to raise funds for KAR. This was refused because KAR refuses to come out to Esentepe. There are a lot of pet loving people in this area who would I am sure do more to help if KAR extended their service further east, surely we are no further away than Lapta on the west of Girne. We seem to be getting more and more stray dogs and cats in this area who need the help of KAR.

KAR doesn't have the volunteers, money, facilities, vehicles (the list goes on and on) to cover a larger area than it does. I think people would be absolutely staggered if they knew just have few people "run" KAR. If KAR were to take Esentepe under it's wing, it would involve huge distances from the area back to the Centre in Arapkoy and any money raised by events would be spent on petrol, vehicle maintenance and extra personnel. So covering the area would be an awful drain on already stretched resources. People still seem to think that we cover Northern Cyprus and the office still receives calls from people way, way out in the country. It is after all Kyrenia Animal Rescue and its taken years to spread as it has at the moment. KAR recently celebrated 14 years at the Arapkoy Centre.

Maybe people do not realise the strain on KAR's volunteers to do what they do, and probably most people do not appreciate just how much everything costs, but could I make a suggestion (and I can't include myself in it because I live in the opposite direction to Esentepe).
Whynot see if there are some folk in the Esentepe area who could become volunteers. They could be the KAR representatives, if you like, although I appreciate there is still costs of transport etc, because any animals taken from Esentepe even to be treatedby the vet , and possibly neutered and put back in the streets, involves petrol costs. But might some one, or some people think aboutit, Or couldKAR give one of their educational talks to show people what is involved and see if they could getone or two volunteers.

As I say, I know it is easy for me to say what might happen when I can't be involved myself, but I share this as a thought.

the other thought is that if more money was raised from the Esentepe area, maybe that would mean Esentepe could be helped!!!??? Bit of a catch twenty two situation really.
