Car Insurance for Turkey

Can anyone help please, we are looking to drive over to Girne in July. My UK insurance does not cover Turkey, and despite trying I have not been able to find any insurance company who will provide cover for Turkey only in the UK. I have been told that one can buy a 30 day insurance policy at the border between Bulgaria and Turkey, in much the same way as one buys insurance when entering the TRNC. Has anybody done this or have knowledge of whether it is possible to buy car insurance at the border
Many thanks

yes you can buy insurance at the border it used to be about 94tl but that's a few years ago now not sure what the opening hours would be maybe best to aim to cross during normal business hours

I drove from UK to TRNC a few years ago and to be honest got fleeced for insurance at every border so make sure you have copious amounts of £ STG because UK Insurance really is not accepted despite it being valid and the rule in Europe seems to be to fleece the Brit Tourist at every opportunity......I got done for 500 quid plus so be prepared for more However please ensure you carry with you the MOT, Registration Document which contains a verifiable address in your name and most important of all the ORIGINAL Bill of Sale or Invoice for your purchase of the vehicle............. otherwise you will get stuck like I did (I had to get a copy faxed through from UK...all very inconvenient believe me and they were not happy with a poor quality fax copy)
I wish you luck as a fairly strenuous journey and for the record , our journey commenced on a 22.00 pm Wednesday evening ferry from Dover....... ending up arriving in Girne new port early on Saturday morning.... it was an experience but do buy some food for the ferry...you most certainly would not want to risk anything cooked on board....and a fold up camp bed may make the slowest ferry journey on planet earth a tad more pleasant.............. I would add that if your purpose is to bring the car here to import it then you will have make the journey but please make the comparison between flying / renting a car (which can be hired for as little as £12 a day) and your intended journey
I hope this helps

Andrew & Bob,
Thanks for the info, its much appreciated. We are making a holiday of the trip itself, stopping off in Bulgaria at my brothers place, then onward to Turkey and the TRNC. I feel more confident now I know that one can get insurance at the border .... and Bob thanks for the info on what documentation to carry, must admit I wouldn't have thought about the bill of sale paperwork.
Cheers

We got our TRNC insurance sorted before we even left England for the drive to Cyprus. Made life much easier at the Girne harbour to have our policy printed and ready with us. Suggest getting cover then having them email the policy and certificate over to you so you can print it out. Our insurance at the time was arranged by Credit West and I was very happy with their price and service. ymmv. Do not even think about trying your green card in the TRNC when you arrive. You will be tired and delayed anyway...they don't accept it and arguing the fact will only delay the frustrating entrance procedure even more.
As for Turkey, I had EU insurance along with my UK policy and upon showing my green card, was allowed in. The other car we were travelling with didn't have a green card and the driver had to jump in a taxi so he could buy insurance in the local Turkish town before being allowed to pass. Nice 1hr round trip...This was at the Edirne border with Greece.
