Friends coming out at the end of the month have been told to wash their baby's bottle in water with a low mineral content, with Evian being recommended as best. I do not think it is available here (is it?) but does anyone know of a suitable alternative from the ones on sale here?

Out of interest, has the baby some sort of medical problem or is it a case of them being told the water here is dangerous. Not trying to be rude, just inquisitive!!

Unless it's imported ,as far as I know all water here is high in mineral content(alkalinity).
I am guessing that what you are trying to do is get the bottle really clean and free from impurities-In which case I think there is(or was) a product called 'Milton' which is specifically used for cleaning babies bottles.
Maybe that would work combined with bottled water?
It is widely used by 'homebrewers for properly cleaning wine and beer bottles-which is how I know about it.

You and me both Philoz. Mind you I also got confused with the contents of a bottle of Evian, earlier in the thread. Is it better or worse then Evsu, which is an awful lot cheaper.

Bottled water in Cyprus in general have no nitrate, iron, zinc, or copper content. The only minerals one may need to check for quantities per litre, as pointed out by the UK Department of Health are:

Maximum mineral concentrations for drinking water
Sodium 200 milligrams per litre (mg/l)
Nitrate 100 mg/l (best below 50 mg/l)
Nitrite 3 mg/l
Sulphate 500 mg/l

You will find that all bottled water in Cyprus have only a fraction of the above mentioned levels of minerals so you need not worry about the brand name. I would however avoid using any "ozone" treated water - which only a couple or so of the dozen bottlers in Cyprus use. If you look at the label of any bottled water, you will see that the above is right.

Bottled water in Cyprus is produced under the strict guidance as laid down by Turkish Laws dictating the maximum mineral contents that are not harmful for human consumption. I suggest you use the bottled mineral water produced in North Cyprus for infant milk preparation, without any worries.

The high calcium and magnesium solids are not a problem short term but on boiling water in your kettle you remove some of the solids anyway, that is what furs up your kettle. Frankly I would have no problem suggesting boiled tap water is fine, indeed there have been questions about bottled water especially when the bottles are formed fresh on the bottling line as the plastic used leaches styrene monomer into the water. If you ever leave a plastic water bottle in the sun the plastic taste is styrene monomer! If that worries you then buy glass bottled water.
