Marion should be able to answer this. We are coming out next week for the first time since October and would be interested to know whether the little shop is still open. Are they still dumping rubbish in the ravine?

Will wave as I pass.

Oh dear, flossie - do I know you real name/ I think I know who you are!
But happy to provide info.
Ye,s the shop is still open, and I go over most days for a backgammon tournament with Alan, plus a coffee!
Yes, thhe ravine is still receiving rubbish, but biodegradable. Did you know that haluk of Kibris Star took the matter to the authorities annd Alsancak Belediye were find. So far nothing bad has been dumped. But the area is ruined, and I hope that it does not create an imbalance.
But the good news is that they had a huge tidy up at the waterfall and last time I went round all the rubbish had gone!
Anything else you want to know???
And 'welcome home' in advance!

Thanks Marion,

Yes you do know me. I live in one of the Greatstone houses up the hill. coming out 16th May.

Do you remember the cat? What an upsetting situation. It turned up again in our garden. My neighbour was not pleased as it was pinching her cat's food. In the end she caught it and left it in Girne. It was a bag of bones and i could not stop thinking about it

The dumping is in a beautiful area and we were absolutely furious when it started. We tried everything to stop it. Photographing the lorries, going to the Belediyese and getting the local press on board. The only thing that happened was that they stopped dumping old beds etc and now it is mainly garden rubbish. It is a fire waiting to happen. The access is on a very narrow road with of course a ravine on one side. The lorry drivers are bullies and make car drivers back up whilst they get past, very unnerving.

I must say it has spoilt our enjoyment of a beautiful area. I am not trying to push ex pats' values on the TC's but why are they so short sighted as to dump on a promoted walking route. Who wants to walk past a dump? What impression does it give walking groups who have come here to see "unspoilt Cyprus"

Yes I remember the cat! Actually it is a situation in reverse that got us our second cat. I am sure she was dumped from somewhere. Already speyed, so definitely had a home. More dogs dead since you went away, so not much changes, but there is always hope.
As to the dumping, not many people know that in 1963 Malatya (then Paleo Sophou) was deemed to be the prettiest village in the whole of Cyprus and the waterfall was a beauty spot visited by tourists and visitors as well as the Sunday meeting point for the folk of the village. so, it is a terrible shame that it is a beauty no longer. Cleaned up, but destroyed with the addition of electric stations, a huge water pump all of which could have been camouflaged. and now on the road in the centre of the village the nursery has a ginormous tank parked on the edge of the road - about 14 ft long and 6 ft tall. Guess it is for water, but it is UGLY - another thing that Alsancak doesn't bother with. But they do occasionally send up a sweeping machine and cut the roadside weeds - killing the poppies at the same time!
so, Flossie - buy you a coffee at The Market???????

Coffee may be delayed. Just come back from hospital with other half in plaster due to either a partial or full ruptured achilles tendon. He is due to go to the Fracture Clinic on Tuesday and we are supposed to fly out on Wed. Somehow I think not!

Marion or anyone else

Do you know of any reliable gardeners who would do a tidy up for us? I usually do it when I am out in May but it may be August now.

Will not know until Tuesday whether it will be practicable to come out.

Thanks again,

flossie

Hi Rita and Robin,

We are flying from beautiful ! Manchester and coming in at the Dark Side. I am afraid that there will not be 2 KibKoms on your flight unless another member is on it!

Do you live anywhere near Malatya?

flossie

PS it is a pleasure to be able to post on this board without bad mannered individuals hijacking the discussion

Hi Flossie, I do know of a couple of people who might be able to help. One used to live in Malatya and comes up reguarly to sort out a couple of the gardens, so I am sure she could fit in a 'one off'. let me know more (e mail me if you like) and I willmake enquiries as soon as i know wha tyou need.

So we might get you out in the sunshine on the due date after all. Don't forget that wheelchair passengers get priority, so there can be good in every bad situation.
