I am considering adding chlorine to water tank which is fed by my well , we use about a ton of water daily and each morning filled from the well .
I am not sure how often and how much chlorine to use and would appreciate any suggestions .

Depending on the level of chlorine you wish to have in the water. 25ml of 100% chlorine per ton of water will give you a level of 2.5 ppm ( parts per million )
To give you some idea, swimming pool are normally run at between 1.5 and 3 ppm. If you are concerned about bacteria in the tank and want to kill it off you should be looking at around 6 ppm as an initial dose. I would not recommend drinking water with this amount of chlorine in it.

Hi Chelwood.
A lot really depends on what you are trying to kill! If you are looking at e-coli .5 ppm would be sufficient as a sanitising dose. If you are looking at legionaires >3ppm is recommended. However well water here is often drinkable. Things to consider would be the likelyhood of contaminants being in the water such as from other houses waste etc, if the water comes out from the ground cold, if it sits in your tank for a long time (seems not to), if your tank has debris etc, any dead legs in pipework or excessive scale on shower heads. If you drink only bottles water your water has to have high levels of contamination to cause illness from washing salads etc. Really if you do not need to why put large amounts of chemicals in?
Have you had a sample checked by a laboratory?

I'm beginning to be a little suspicious because there does seem to be an influx of questions about water on Forums. Is someone using scare tactics about local mains water or what? I have friends that even after 10 years of living here have never used their tap water, only bottled water for every thing, other than washing. They tell me I'll get e-coli etc and I ask them "how many more stomach problems have you had than me since we've known each other". I used to work in the plastic bottle business and when I see plastic water bottles (of all sizes) sitting in the sun it makes me shudder.

Er WHY?
I am not advocating not using the mains, am happy to drink when it is on but not from the storage tanks.

J, suddenly there seems to be more people on forums querying mains water and more and more friends are buying bottled water for cooking and making coffee etc. Some of whom I know have never used mains water for anything other than doing washing etc., which seems to me to be totally unnecessary. I'm not suggesting drinking litres of water straight from the tank in the garden, but boiled I see no problem with. As to being unhappy about see large plastic bottles sitting for hours in the sun waiting to be delivered, seems obvious to me.

Still not sure what you are getting at. Do you think the water will go off?
