How can I get to watch BBC Iplayer or C4OD

I am coming out tomorrow for a couple of weeks and would like to know if anyone can advise me how to get BBC, ITV etc catchup programs on my laptop. I have heard that the way to do this is to change your server to a proxy server which then fools the service provider to allow it. But how do I do this and which proxy server should I use ?

What company / method do you use to connect to the Internet?

The simplest way is probably to type the following address into your browser: -
http://www.expattelly.com/ - and pay 10 Euros for a month's usage.
You can subscribe to a full-blown VPN if you wish - there are plenty to choose from, and although possible a bit cheaper, would require a little more 'setting up' - and I take it that you're not a 'techie

Thanks Keith. Correct assumption as to my techie level. Also, I had heard from others that proxy sites can be a haven for viruses so will take your advice re expat-telly.

I don't use a dongle myself, but according to a rough estimate that I saw on another site, "...a 10GB dongle would allow you to watch 20 hours of lower quality to 10 hours of higher quality TV if my maths is correct..."
As far as I know, 10GB costs 70TL, 15 GB costs 80TL plus the cost of buying the dongle if you don't have one.
I think that they do a discounted dongle if you buy a specified data package, but you'd need to check.

I couldn't even get skype to work for more that a few seconds with a dongle as speed was just not fast enough. Now have multimax and paid for download speed of 4gb but testing at 10 to 25gb download depending on time of day. Cost is 80tl per month but cheaper on a longer contract and you can get bbc1 bbc2 itv1 and itv2 live on their site as a subscriber, plus bbc iplayer (we just log in directly and previously couldn't so Multimax must include a VPN Mask on system) and kids have been watching cbbc live too. Need a wireless router at 85tl or bring your own. Can't fault this, everything working a dream, skyping to UK great too, kids games brilliant. No delays, buffering etc just straight tv with no picture or sound problems. P.S. I don't work for them!

Just for info oneplustwo (I do work for Multimax) we do currently 'auto VPN' traffic to BBC site. However we are planning to turn this function off at some stage in the future, replacing it with the live feeds you have mentioned and a 'manual VPN' for catchup for BBC and any other UK restricted sites as well. Details of how to configure the 'maunal VPN' service can be found here

As for 3G dongles, speed wise they can be fast but it is very location dependent on what actual speeds you get. In general terms the main advantage of a connection like those offered by Multimax (and others) over 3G dongles is that we (they) do not have monthly data limits. The main disadvantage is our connections are not 'mobile'.
Also just to try and be as clear as possible you do not need a wifi AP / router if you only want to connect one machine wired, or multiple machines wired (which would require just a switch). In reality most people want wireless connectivity within their homes, and for this you do as you say need a wifi AP, which we can provide for 85TL or you can use your own, though if we have to configure your equipment and it proves difficult to do so we may charge for that as well.

Thanks for the info Erol.... What about Channel 4 as currently blocked on that. The nice lady in your office said you were trying to get it. That would be great as love that channel's documentaries and stuff. Roll out Channel 4!

oneplustwo,
You can still watch Ch4, Ch5 using Multimax, but you would need to configure the 'manual' VPN - it's not difficult, and they will give you detailed instructions if you need it.
However, this thread is in response to a query from someone who is not a 'techie', who is coming out for two weeks, and who uses a dongle...
Anyone got any further advice for him?

Hi erolz
Do you have to have Multimax to do the programme you kindly put on here ?

We do hope to add channel 4 and 5 to the multimax live feeds in the near future. For catchup (4oD) you would need to use the manual VPN

Yes, the VPN configuration link I pasted above will only work for multimax connections I am afraid.

Live without UK telly for two weeks ? Other than that either use a VPN service for one month as you suggested already Keith, or for live try flimon.com, though they will need to keep an eye on usage when watching any video using a dongle as it will eat up the monthly data allowance pretty quickly.

What is the minimum length of contract with Multimax? We are only out usually for about 5 weeks twice a year?

Multimax would not really be suitable given the times you would be here. 12 months would be normal contract period. You can suspend your account for up to 6 months but even then you would be paying for much of the year when you are not here. Sorry.

Works OK, although I made the mistake of getting 4 GB simcard from Turkcell for 70 TL when I could have got 10 GB for just an extra 10 TL, so ITV iplayer et all are a little slower to call up the desired content but once up everything's fine.

Looks like the prices on the website are wrong then!
BTW - there shouldn't be any difference in the performance between a 4GB & a 10GB - 10GB will just last longer...

Oops. Further to my last reply, all OK except C4OD. For some reason cannot access C4 with Expattelly.

If you want live ITV1 or ITV2 streams (as a multimax customer) please use the following link
http://mmcyp.com/index.php?option=com_c ... 58&lang=en
For ITV player 'catchup' services you will need to use the free multimax VPN service. Details on how to set this up can be found here
http://mmcyp.com/index.php?option=com_k ... 38&lang=en
If you have any problems do feel free to PM me (I work for MM) via this board or ring customer support.
