Buying from Ikea in the South

We are coming over at the end of the month and may try and get to the South to purchase a sofa. Does anyone have or know anyone with a van or van and driver for hire and how much duty would I be expected to pay?
If this isn't possible can anyone recommend a furniture shop in the north that sells good quality/modern sofas at a decent price?
Many thanks.

Chances are you will get it impounded at Metehan, they do not allow furniture normally and def not from IKEA.
Depending how much you want to pay there are numerous furniture shops that sell everything in all price ranges.

Burhans (Alsancak & Lefkosia) are in my opinion the best quality furniture shop on the island and are very reasonably priced.
They will hand make any sofa and you choose the material and colours.

Hi, If you have photograph of what you want take it into Burhans in Alsancak or Lefkosa, they will make a very good copy for you, you might not get the same material as the photograph, but they have samples. You can get almost anything copied in TRNC.

You would probably get what you want from Electrokur just off, to the right, the roundabout at the bottom of the Lefkosia road on the way into Girne.

I think that is a little unfair, the TRNC is not short of money largely thanks to Turkey and believe me there are very few 'poor' tc's.

It would be nice though if we did our little bit to help it stand on its own two feet.

Thanks iancrumpy
Maybe I was being unfair, but I still feel we should buy in the North,if we have decided to live here.

In her post she said that she MAY try, and also asked for recommendations here. Give her a chance, she hasn't even moved here yet. If she had known of the replies that she has received for suppliers here, perhaps she would not of mentioned IKEA, and to be honest, I don't really think it has anything to do with anyone else if someone wants to buy elsewhere. How many people buy in the UK or elsewhere and bring it here rather than buy it here?

Thanks for all of your replys.
The reason I am interested in maybe going to Ikea is that we have 3 children, so can you imagine "come on kids, no pool today just furniture shopping"!!! Really wouldnt impress them lol! I know there are lots of furniture shops in the North and would be so much easier purchasing there however they dont seem to have any decent websites to browse through.
Ikea has a great website and I found a nice sofa, job done. I do want to buy from the North and have made a note of all of your recommendiations.
I am by the way updating my sofa which was purchased from the North 6 years ago
Thank you

Hey Flash Alex, practice what you preach!!! On another thread you have said you always fly out of Larnaca??? Whats that all about??? Why not support the North economy by flying out of Ercan?

Never really understood people saying Ikea furniture is cheap rubbish. I've been buying it for years and I've not had a single problem with any of it. The engineers and designers which are employed by Ikea are exceptional at their job, which is why the company is so successful in the first place. In comparison I have to say that the furniture I have seen in the north seems to be overpriced and it at least feels and looks cheap generally.
