hi there, i caught a snake in my garden last night - can anybody tell me what kind of snake it is - at the moment it/she is in a mini catcarrier but i would like to let her go as soon as possible
any ideas??? i like snakes because they are fascinating animals and "my" one should go to a place she likes

I could be mistaken but it looks like Blunt Nosed Viper,the most poisonous one.the colouring is correct and look at the nose.This type put my dog in the vet's care for 12 days and she nearly died,I would take it as far away as possible!!!

I may be wrong but I'm pretty sure that's a blunt nosed viper which means it's poisonous! No idea what you should do with it but whatever you do, please be careful!

thanks for your advices, owl lady and smiler - if it's a blunt nose viper (and i'm afraid it is after i had a look in the book "snakes of cyprus" from snakegeorge) i am glad i have trained my dogs to keep in distance of all they don't know and just bark
first training subjects were hedgehogs, later chamelions and even if a cat appears they are careful
... and yes, i am careful ...

Wish I could instill fear into one of my dogs,she will still not learn,had a Chameleon with in days of coming back from the vets,then a crow,and then tried to get to another Blunt nosed in the house.The blunt nosed is a protected species,so I am not saying what happened to mine!!!!

hey bubbles, "my" one here is about 80 cm long and very quiet in the box she is now - don't worry, i will take her up to the mountains tomorrow and she will hopefully survive for many years .... and i also hope she'll never appear in your garden, owl lady ...

I have to ask,how do you sex a snake??? Did you take "it" to the mountains?

Take it somewhere without people and where there is water. Do you have a pool? They are always looking for water. I'd love to see one, but here in Dipkarpaz there are no pools and no open water. Unfortunately Local people want to kill any snake. They are terrified of them.

hi again, well, i don't know if the snake is male or female - in english you only use "the", in german it is different, we have
"she" (femininum), "he" (masculinum) and "das" (neutrum) - the sake for you, die schlange for me
how i caught it: i first put a bamboo basket over the snake, waited for a while until it calmed down, little cat carrier next to the basket, two sticks (2m), one to lift the basket, the other one with a hook to take the snake into the box - job done
now it is back up in the mountains where she/he hopefully survives for many years - end of story - cheers and thanks for your posts
