Expired Medications

Just wondering if there is a government program that collects expired medications as a way of disposal? I asked 1 pharmacy if they send expired medications back or what do they do with it- and just said to put it in the garbage.
I googled "what to do with expired medications" and they mentioned a government program or the garbage.
?

I am surprised as most reputable pharmacies with English speaking pharmacists (most are) say bring them back and we will deal with them. By the way many unused drugs are needed in Syria and I have no idea how to get them there but I am sure there will be a way. The wide world has just opened their eyes to the horror happening there.

HM I know a lot of places in the world need medication. Now if "expired" meds were still good to use despite the "date", then why don't all pharmacies say hey give us the unused/expired meds and we will take care of it- send to other countries that need it. I don't know about Syria, but hey I'll def look online about what to do..

Have a word with the pharmacist at Catalkoy, I took some in there and he said he would pass them on to the appropriate body, in this case it was the local hospital.

I was in complete agreement with this thread and thought what a great idea until I came to the post from Poppy and what the Catalkoy pharmcist told her. Give tablets etc to local state hospitals if you still have tablets that you haven't taken, but to give local hospitals "Expired" medication I think is pushing it or have a misunderstood the qustion?

I agree with you totally Sophie, only stating what I was told by the pharmacist, whether this happened or not I could not say.

I think medications should be given back to the pharmacy and then from there maybe they can research what will be the affects of taking them. I don't want anyone to take them if its harmful. I feel kind of resistant if it goes to the hospital and they are using it... Hopefully the hospital can send it to labs... I don't know, but atl east I didn't just discard them in the waste where animals can get to it or go in the earth.

I know the pharmacist you mean Wibow, but did they tell you what they would do with them after that? Before I hand any expired drugs over, I want to know EXACTLY why they are going to do with them.
