Does anyone know if there is a car hire office in the south close to the Ledra crossing. We have a hire car here so cannot take it over but we would like to have a drive around in the south for a day.

We are using Avis - 2 Byron Ave, Nicosia. Not to far from the Ledra crossing and Paphos gate. The greek name of the road is Lordou Vyronos, Nicosia.

Have tried to find a company right on the border crossing but seems not to be one.

Hope this helps

Many thanks, do they let you hire for one day only?

Very few car hire companies in the world will rent for one day, they may well let you have the car but in all probability you will pay the minimum 3 day rate.

Have you asked your local rental company, many do let you take cars across but be aware of the insurance implications.?

Confirm that Avis have one day hire rates. Rates are pretty good. Be careful as you will pay for a full tank of fuel and you will not get a refund if you return it back with half a tank left. So if you intend not to travel far then maybe not the best deal for you. Maybe check other companies out and read the small print re fuel. We are having an overnight in Limassol so hiring for two days and intend to travel around quiet a bit so will make full use of the tank of fuel.

We have crossed over before and took a taxi from/to Ledra Palace when hiring a car - this time we did a lot of searching to find a company that we could walk to once we crossed over.

Not investigated the taking of hire car from north to south - I have read that some companies will allow you to do this so would be good if anyone can offer advice as to what companies allow and also what the procedure is.

Good luck with whatever you decide.

Many thanks for the useful information. I will check it out to see if it is a goer. The full tank of fuel may make it a bit expensive, looks like a 2 day trip might be the way.

Baspinar,A-One + another opposite Colony allow North/South trips.3 days min hire. You need to get a Greekside tax & MOT at border + insurance.Tax/MOT not open Saturday. If you hire North, you will also need a letter of consent. We did it once, never again, too much hassle.

Becker - Thanks for the info.

I did think that taking a north hire car across to the south could well be a little complicated with regards to paperwork, insurance etc - your experience seems to have confirmed it.

Hiring a car on the south side seems and easier option albeit maybe not cost effective if its just for 1 day.

As I usually fly into the south, I've found this company pretty good: http://www.cyprus-car.com/
Never any problem driving in the whole island, subject to obtaining the usual insurance at the green line. I believe its a bi-communal company. I'm told that Car Hire 3000 area also OK.
It seems the system is geared to cars form the south crossing to the north and buying insurance at the border, but north the other way round. Presumably residents can get all year all island policies can they?

I hired a car from A1 and they arranged all the correct paperwork for me to take it south when I asked them, I only had to pay the additional insurance at the boarder (25 euros) Went across 4 times in the car, including 3 Larnaca runs and had no problems.

Halfull, the car must have had a tax certificate from South as you cannot insure without one!We had to get ours from the office next to Greek side checkpoint.

Hi could someone please let me know if we hire a car at Larnaca airport for a stay in the north can we purchase comprehensive insurance at the border crossing into the north or can you only get third party insurance.
