BBC - Hard Talk - Cypriot Economy & Division
Post Number:#1 by suehowlittle » Thu May 17, 2012 7:04 am
For those of you who have access to BBC's Iplayer, then Hardtalk, which was on before 7.00am this morning is worth watching.
It mainly discusses the Cypriot economy (they have 172 bank branches in mainland Greece - what!|!) They are in a huge mess with their only bailout coming from Russia. He did say that there were Cyprus government guarantees for people with bank accounts but that they did not really have the money to deal with that.
Near the end of the programme Stephen Sackur discusses the division of the island, and then, surprise surprise here, he discussed the possibility of the annexation with Turkey.
And I thought that the outside world was taking no notice due to much larger events!!

thanks for the info. can;'t catch up on this, so thanks for the run down. But the BBC are pretty much on the ball with world news - it is all the others that ignore us.

It was the Cypriot economy that was being discussed and their exposure to what is happening in Greece - if they have 172 bank branches there then they are extremely vulnerable to say the least.
It was a Cypriot finance minister (past or present) who was getting the grilling from Stephen Sackur.
Very interesting - Hardtalk is one of my favourite early morning programmes.

On a bit of a different subject, but it has to do with the economy, do you think Turkey will get fed up of all the strikes in the TRNC. Look at the state of Lefkosa. Do you think Turkey will one day ship their own guys in to run the place.

For info the program will be shown on BBC News channel 12:30 AM, Friday 18th May 2012 and a few hours after that should be available from BBC iPlayer site for streaming or download on the following URL
http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b0 ... ular_Bank/
As far as I can tell Hard Talk is initially shown on BBC World Service and then shown on BBC News and once it has aired on BBC News is then available via iplayer.

I also see it as a country called Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus. Saw the programme as was repeated aat 6.30 pm thought the chap being interviewed was very fair in the answers he gave, did not try and riggle out of any questions re their economy.

No one knows what the next couple of weeks will bring. Here and now within the EUZone almost all of the economies are weak. Turkey's economy is relatively stable. Not forgetting Turkey has a younger population than most of Europe who have an increasing % population of pensioners that the working population have to support .
As to the situation here Turkey probably is going to keep its cards close and surprise everyone with a trump.
