Hristofyas says he'd like TCs to compete for Cyprus

The Greek Cypriot leader, Dimitris Hristofyas, told GC newspapers at a reception in London that he'd like TCs to compete in the Cypriot team in the 2016 Olympics. He added however, that before then there has to be developments in the Cyprus Problem, which according to him weren't possible with the current administration: He said that in Talat's time (the president before Eroğlu), when Erdoğan saw him at summits etc, he would come over to ask him how the negotiations were progressing, but now Erdoğan apparently just turns his back to Hristofyas.

Perhaps Christofias should shift his ass somewhat and join the real world. His party are not prepared to change their stance on anything. In 2004 the Turkish Cypriots voted yes to the Annan plan. The Greek Cypriots voted no.But still the TCs had the rug puled from under them.

I certainly don't disagree with you Paul - I didn't express an opinion in my opening post as I merely wanted to relay what was written in the newspaper's report.

By the way, in hindsight I realise the English version of the GC leader's surname would have been more appropriate than the Turkish version.

the first word I learned re the Cyprus situation was 'intransigence' and that was over 20 years ago. Nothing has changed, and certainly today Christofias is just as intransigent as ever. As to the quesitons, I guess it is more a quesitonof what I would like, namely TRNC to compete, but my true answer must be 'I don't know'.

ian,

I don't want to rubbish your enthusiasm
but given the situation on the ground,
"reports" like this are of very little consequence

more to the point, what do YOU think and why?

Andre,

As you may have observed, I often (at least while I am on holiday) scan the Turkısh and TC news web-sites and translate any articles and reports that I feel may be of interest to Kibkommers. My stance in the opening posts of these threads is always impartial as my objective is merely to relay the information (and tone) given by the news web-sites.

I shouldn't have to explain my actions to you Andre

For the record, I was the fırst to vote that TC athletes will represent Turkey in the 2016 Olympics, because, with the current administrations on both sides, I see little hope of any developments in the Cyprob. Moreover by 2016 I would guess that Ankara will be even more firmly in control of TRNC affairs. My preference would be for the athletes to represent TRNC, but in my opinion, that is not likely

ian,

you have indeed reported very objectively in recent postings:
an earthquake, power cuts, government waste, accidents and
what we would both presume to call turkification of the karpaz

but you have also used the loaded phrases "cyprob" and "tc",
though without explaining exactly what you mean in each case

a modest suggestion to help us clarify your postings perhaps,
you let us have your definition of "cyprob" and of "tc" and to
allow others including even myself to give our own definitions

such commonly used phrases may yet mean different things to
different people ...so in the interest of objectivity it may be a
good idea to collect a range of opinions on these vexed issues

I honestly don't feel I can vote for 1, 2 or 3. because I have no idea. Un lessd drastic changes are made, TRNC won't be allowed to take party. If it does under its own flag, that is recognition. Or will atheletes be allowed to compete under the Olympic Flag (option 4 which is not given). I feel that could be the most likelyu option, unless drastic changes are made. for TRNC atheltes to compete under Turkey's flag means they are not representing northern Cyprus but Turkey and to me that is meaningless.

as to cypprob and TC I assume the abbreviation s are for The Cyprus Prob lem and Turkish Cypriots, just as GC is GreekCypriots.

yes marion,

"cyprob" clearly means cyprus problem and equally "tc" stands for
turkish cypriot ...but what do these popular terms actually mean?

to get the ball rolling I will offer my own best definitions:

cyprob
means lack of agreement between the parties to the cyprus dispute,
which stemmed from a one-time conflict over security and land rights

turkish cypriot
is a citizen of the turkish republic of northern cyprus

there may well be many other definitions of these used-and-abused
terms no more or no less objective than mine
and like most things concerning ownership, posession and identity very
much a matter of what is in the eye of the beholder

of course you could define the "cyprob" as the turkish army presence
on the island, or just as accurately as the blockade engineered in
opposition to it

and you may see turkish cypriots as the turkish-speaking inhabitants
of the island in 1974 and their offspring...though you will have to decide
whether to include married couples of mixed mainland/cyprus origin and
what to do about their kids

of course as ian crumpy seems to suggest with his posting re: university
expansion in the karpaz, the onward march of turkification on the island
may eventually make a mockery of any strict deliniation between turkish cypriots and cypriot turks
