Re: Everything you wanted to know about cancer
This is such a good programme. I don't want to just pick out certain types of Cancer but awareness of Prostate Cancer and Pancreatic are in the forefront in UK. Here's the link for the Pancreatic cause by David Jason

and Prostate Cancer has been made aware by Kenny Jones, the drummer of The Small Faces. He was on Sky News this morning and rightly said(in my opinion) men do not talk about Prostate and don't talk among their friends like women do. I hope you get lots of people to go.

Re: Everything you wanted to know about cancer
As a typical bloke I can say we definitely don't talk about it.
I moved to where I live 20 years ago and have no idea who or where my Doctor is as I've never been.
The bloke mentality is "ignore, ignore, ignore............if it continues then take a painkiller...............if it continues take an anti-biotic...............if it continues look on the internet and then decide 100% you are going to die"
This programme looks well put together and extensive. Well worth a look.

Re: Everything you wanted to know about cancer
Three ladies connedcted with ATA are on Can Gazi's Cup of Conversaiton this week-end (Saturday and Tuesday I think) and will be talking about this among other thing,s and it was suggested that for those who cannot attend due to work, family, commitments or just the 'male ignore it' syndrome, why not give your questions to be answered to Pearl Mitchell at atamail13@gmail.com, or to me via e mail or message here.
We can then report back on some of the answers.
Hope this might help some people, especially men who can end up with others at Greenhills, just because of ignoring it all.

Re: Everything you wanted to know about cancer
As a surviver myself I know first hand how important early detection is. If it were not for the knowledge of my partner and my doctor I would not be here today. I think this is an amazing idea and urge as many people to go as possible.

One type of cancer which is seldom publisised is secondary cancer (metastases). I was unlucky enough to be a victim by way of bone cancer which had come from a small breast cancer. Thought I had pulled a ligament in my leg but thanks to the diligence of the orthopaedic surgeon they found it was cancer and were able to treat both cancers. Hopefully, so far it seems successful. You just never know what is lurking around the corner.

Re: Everything you wanted to know about cancer
It is wonderful that we live in an age where people are openly talking about cancer When my father died, it was so 'hush hush' tha t my mother did not even tell his family. And my father was terrified as he did not understand what was going on and no one spoke the real truth to him.
A ;school' like this helps even more to dispel fears and could well save lives. It seems that early detection is one key, but I am waiting to hear about latest technology.
No doubt many kibkomers will be there, but please everyone spread the word to friends and neighbours who are not members of the forum , as it could be a life saver to them or their family and friends.

I think that's the same date as Blood Donor Day. Hope it doesn't affect them too much.

Re: Everything you wanted to know about cancer
I do hope the day was well attended. I am sorry I didnt make it. I have broken my leg and my husband was in hospital so not any chance. My father died of bowel cancer and his sister and brother. Plus another brother survived bowel cancer. I am getting screened when my leg is out of plaster. People should be aware that genetics also a factor that should be taken in to account.

Re: Everything you wanted to know about cancer
When I get the time (one sick cat permitting) I will do a write up for the ATA web page and also share it on here, but for now, may I say that personally I left the well attended day with two emotions - elation and despair.
Elation on hearing all the wonderful advances in diagnostics, treatment and prognosis, but despair in knowing that my bank balance will not be able to afford it. However, the second emotion is of little matter compared to the first. This hospital works on team work and hearing them all yesterday gave me a sense of sadness at knowing if my family and friends who died yesteryear were here today, they would probably be cured, but absolute joy knowing that many more people will be helped today than ever they could have been in the past. There is not yet a cure for all 200 of the cancers that are out there, but a huge percentage now are helped to stay alive and have a great quality of life for a long time.
There is talk of a possible further 'school' in the not too distant future.
So, as they say 'watch this space.'
