Points on license for speeding?
Around four weeks ago the other half went through a speed camera over the allowed speed. He realised it had happened when he saw the flash.
This morning, nice surprise, a policeman on the doorstep. I was the only person at home The policeman didn't speak English, I don't speak Turkish so we had a dance around the houses.
The document on his clip board had the other halves name on it & I realised that it must be a summons for speeding.
Policeman asked for my passport, copied my name & P/port no onto the form and asked me to sign. I thought I was signing to say I'd accepted the summons so I did as asked.
This afternoon we went to the p/station to pay the fine. I remained in the car with the dog, the other half went into the p/station taking all the documents from the car. The policeman asked for my license took the money and gave a receipt.
Does this mean that I get the points against me? I wasn't driving.
How do they distribute points? Just on a computer data base?

'My understanding is...' (cop out )
The person who's name appears on the vehicle registration document is presumed to be the driver, unless you speak up and say "It wasn't me, it was xxxxx".
So, if you are the registered owner, or if it is in joint names and they took your driving license details, then yes, you have got the points!
If the vehicle is registered in your husband's name, and they asked for your licence, they must have thought that you were driving, and you've still got the points

Re: Points on license for speeding?
It depends on how fast you were travelling above the speed limit at the camera ..
There are 3 categories over the speed limit at the camera .. Up to 20km/hr .. Between 20-40km/hr .. Over 40km/hr
Hope you can understand ..

Just out of interest - where was the speed camera? I didn't think they used flashing ones here. I've never seen one flash here and given digital camera capabilities I'm surprised a flash is needed.

Groucho, The camera was just before you turn for Arafina bar/ restaurant Karach traveling towards Esentepe. He clearly saw the flash though it was a bright morning around 10.45am.
Harita the category was the first. He was only just over the speed limit and the fine was 167tl

Bonnie, I don't think Keith is far off the point.
If you were not driving and do not want to accept the points you can ask for a photo from the speeding camera however it is my understanding that you have to pay for this and go to Lefkosa to get it.
You obviously do not get into this situation often so all is not lost because I got caught 2 months ago and was fined 150TL plus 12 points but was surprised to to be told by Girne Police that the points only sit on your licence for 16 months which seemed an odd time period to me. I also learnt that I could have up to 100 points before being disqualified!

Re: Points on license for speeding?
Actually, you don't even need to ask for a 'photo, unless the person named as the driver disputes being the driver at the time of the offence.
A few months ago, while my partner was away, I took his car for a spin, just to charge the battery etc, and as it is a lot newer, and less noisy than mine, and accelerates effortlessly, I managed to break the speed limit near Escape Beach (not by very much!).
The Penalty Notice duly arrived, and we trooped off to the Police Station, found the 'Pay Office', and handed over the notice. The chap said '"Licence please" - and I said "It was me that was driving" - he just stuck his hand out and repeated "Licence please", so I handed him my documents, which he was quite happy about.
A local did tell me that they don't seem to mind whose licence it is, as long as you pay the penalty, and they've got some details to enter on the computer

Certainly with the locals they use wife's licence or other family members, police don't seem bothered as long as they have a licence.

Re: Points on license for speeding?
Hi Keith,
Thanks for the explanation. Though I don't speak the language I think I made it perfectly clear with body language and pointing to the two passports that I wasn't driving at the time of the offence to the policeman on the doorstep. However he still insisted on putting my name & p/port no on the form. I thought it was because I was accepting the fixed penalty notice on my behalf of my other half.
I believe your local friend was bang on the money.
Scoobydoo, Thankyou for the information I've no idea how many points I've been awarded for an offence I didn't commit.I'm not particularly bothered. Rarely drive here but like to keep my license current for emergencies, and when the chauffeur is not available.
I just thought it was all very odd, & I'm grateful the other half wasn't wanted for murder!!!

Re: Points on license for speeding?
You lot are making life in Toytown out to be a chore, rather than the giggle it really is. We were informed at the checkpoint a couple of years ago that we had four speeding tickets. We went to Girne police station to find these were accumulated over 18 months. We had a great laugh with the backroom boys trying to work out where and when and who, when we said "Sod it just give us two each." All done and dusted we shook hands and off we went a little poorer but no less appreciative of the cranky place we live in.

Re: Points on license for speeding?
Frontalman, They dealt with yours very quickly. When I arrived here last year Feb 2014 I was told I had 3 speeding tickets dating back to 2009, 2010, and 2011. Since 2009 I'd been to the UK and back here several times with never a mention of the speed fines.
From the previous posts they must have cleared the backlog if the polis are arriving on people's doorsteps almost instantaneously. Aye there's money to be made from flashing.
P.S. When I first came here in 2004 the police had just the one hand held speed thingy by the side of the road. I now know where the new cameras are so no speeding for me now.

Re: Points on license for speeding?
I have had 4 speeding fines over the last 6 years and nobody has ever mentioned points on my licence! I have since bought a speed camera detector from Era Nav, which is programmed with all the fixed speed camera sites and warns me when I approach them. In addition, I can add new camera sites as and when I find them.

PapaBravo, are you serious?
If you are then how does your new machine detect the policeman standing unexpectedly on the roadside?

Re: Points on license for speeding?
This gadget does not detect mobile speed camaras you have to add them when you know the locations the police stand, it will remind you as you approach I have had one of these for 5 years and have not had a ticket since.
They cost aprox 150TL but the company will update them free of charge when it is needed, they also have camaras loaded that used to be in the South.
The company is opposite the house Restaurant up above some shops, It has GPS advertised on the building.

Re: Points on license for speeding?
Every motoring offence in the TRNC carries points, the are recorded on the computer, if you get caught speeding to many times in one year ( total 100 points ) when you go to pay your fine they will keep your licence for 3 months at the police station. If you go into the traffic office you will see them in a case on the wall, when I last looked they were mostly young Turkish ladies. ( I was involved in a car crash ).

It took precisely 13 days to get my fine ..
Caught speeding on a Sunday, a week the following Saturday, policeman with clipboard knocking on the door ..

Re: Points on license for speeding?
Slightly off topic, but 'What the hell...'
I would like a device that warns me when I am going faster than the speed limit for the road that I'm on - regardless of whether there's a speed camera there, or not.
I do always try to drive within the speed limit ( and obviously sometimes, a lot slower, dependent on conditions) but there are roads where the limit goes up and down like, well, an 'uppy, downy thing' and it's easy to lose track, particularly when the signs are obscured by foliage, or other vehicles...
I know that some GPS units in the UK have this feature, but I've not seen one here - anyone?
