Water electric & council tax exemption
I have been told that local people are exempt from paying certain utility bills such as water, council bills, & electric.
Whilst local people who struggle with little income, live in poor housing possibly have children or who are disabled.
Being exempt from paying I can understand.
However i would like to question if certain employees employed by local government are exempt as perks of the job.???

I was also surprised to read this on previous posts regarding water bills. Some people said I should not complain about the 50% rise in water charges that Lapta are imposing, because locals are having to pay them also. Would be good to have some clarification on this.

My neighbours are local and they have to pay their water and electric bills. I have on occasion paid theirs when I was going to pay mine and they asked me to pay theirs too.Don't know about council tax.

Re: Water electric & council tax exemption
If you have your water meter disconnected then you are exempt quite a few of the charges (water, health, rubbish collection) - but you do pay the annual property tax. It's worth doing if you are only here occasionally but it probably differs from belediye to belediye and should be checked locally as should the reconnection charge.
I would imagine quite a few locals, especially those with older properties, have a well, have never had a water meter and thus don't pay.

Fair is Fair
It's a matter of equality. I am a pensioner chose to live in this country for its sea, sun and "reasonable standard / cost of living".
Utility provision such as water, electricity & gas should be applied fairly to all. There shouldn't be them and us in this issue (rates), all must pay same rate. Lapta water is no better than Lefkosa water, and Chtolkoy service provision is not better than Karpaz service or Esentepe, Buyok kunuk services. All should pay same utility rate
Personally, I disagree with some who give a poor excuse for "dishonesty" & "discrimination". cost of water charged by an authority over and above the norm is criminal and such practice should be stopped.
In Turkey, you pay for the utility same as the natives, yet in TRNC a tier created under the name of "non native/ foreigner, expat, etc., etc.,)
Old age has no nationality. I need water, gas & electricity same as the natives, and I should not be overcharged for these amenities, all because I am "an Expat"... Baaaa humbug
Anyone has seen book of rules with regard to "Exemption", NOT HEARSAY
is it published?
is it available to read?
fatsam

My husband works in the parks and gardens department of Girne belideye. He is on the minimum wage but I can assure you we have to pay all bills in full.
Remember, no matter where you go, there you are.

Re: Water electric & council tax exemption
I was advised last summer by a person who rented out one of the properties I look after electric was a different amount 16.95tl than what was on the bill. The charge on the bill at the time was .45krs a unit plus KDV, The following info is pasted from the Kibtek site, I believe yoksul means 'poor' therefore assume like in the UK instead of the benefit system citizens can apply to each supplier when on a low income or out of work which I can understand. We chose to come here but due to 'us' coming here a simple life has become so different and where can the real citizens go to change their life?
