Re: Highway Code???
fatsam I had to take a motor bike test about 5 years ago and could not find a TRNC highway code book, was told by the driving school to get one from the UK.
I used the on line version and studied what I though was relevant to the TRNC. On the big day we had to draw straws to see which instructor would test us.
This instructor had a copy of the UK highway code and turned the pages and said what doe this sign mean, well it was a blue sign I had never seen with a 50 marked on it, I said thinking blue is for motorways it was no faster than 50, the correct answer was no slower than 50. We do not have motor ways in the TRNC and the ones on Turkish motorways do not use UK signs.
So Sam use the down load from the UK and learn it as you would in the UK, the test is simple after the questions.

My friend took driving lessons last year and the driving school gave her a copy of an english highway code book and they crossed out all the bits that are irrelevant to the TRNC - I guess they must cross out how to use roundabouts and zebra/pedestrian crossings!

Re: Highway Code???
Section 1, (locals) Whilst driving your JCB on the Bypass and texting at the same time please do not straddle both lanes there fore building up a long line of irritated drivers.
Section 2, When on your mobile and smoking at the same time it is perfectly normal to slow down to 10 Kmts. then when the car behind you tries to overtake, accelerate rapidly.
Section 3, (locals and expats) If you are driving home after drinking a bottle of Raki or 8 pints of Efes (or both) you may find it easier to drive in a straight line if you close one eye.
Section 4, leaving a side road to join a main road, always wait until the traffic approaching you on the main road is approx. 3 meters away if you time it right you WILL cause a collision.
Section 4, If overtaking on the inside along the pedestrian area (undertaking), near to Lemar at Karaoglanoglu please have a little respect for the children walking from school.
Section 5, Please try to have 1light working on I corner of you car.
Section 6, When re fixing your spoilers and bumpers with string or wire, it will be more affective if you tie a little tighter to avoid them dragging on the road.
Section 7, Always remember your in car sound system is far more important than having tread on your tyres.
Section 8, Dolmus drivers are exempt of all laws, eating a kebab smoking and texting at the same time is no problem and they can pull out on you at any time.
Happy Motoring.

12.1.2.3 Sub-section 2a "Police Officers must smoke, text and use only one hand whilst driving lest they cause alarm to other road users and must at all times act in accordance with the modus operandi of the civilian population."
Note:- Failure to do so is a disciplinary offence and will automatically lead to suspension on full pay while the matter is investigated by a committee of senior officers to determine:-
A. Whether or not the officer is in fact related to the right family..... and
B. Whether the officer in question has any outstanding bribes in abeyance.

Re: Highway Code???
I am going back to 1991 when my daughter took her test. After a few lessons I went out with her. Driving down Kyrenia high street she turned left into a No Entry street, when I mentioned this to her she said "I thought that, but my instructor said to take no notice". !!!!!

Re: Highway Code???
Now that fatsam has received full education on the Highway Code for TRNC can I ask a question please?
On some speed restriction/information signs there is a picture of a vehicle on fire - what is the meaning of this symbol?

It means - you need 'fire and theft' insurance.... however, why anyone would steal a burning car is beyond me!waddo wrote:Now that fatsam has received full education on the Highway Code for TRNC can I ask a question please?

Thanks! I did ask at the Police station but they did not know - lol. Now I just make sure I am not on fire at that speed, that seems to work ok.

This just gets better I thought the car on fire sign, was not actually a car on fire I thought it was just a flash notice directed at Red Plate cars ???

Well Hello fellow kibkom,
I see the "The Highway Code" is taking a funny turn. I must say, I like your way of approach "humorous questions & funny answers" & amusing responses.
Personally, it's the best way to maintain " kibkom members & visitors" attention to the importance of learning Highway Code. Please keep it going.
Again I thank you all. stay safe & never let a moron driver ruin your day.

When the car in front is about to turn right, (You can tell this by) Driver has is arm fully out of the window and pointing right, also them orange things on the corners of the car are, indicators, the right hand ones will be flashing. This does not mean you can overtake just as the car in starts to turn right.

Re: Highway Code??? (keep it going)
Is it just me , or is it general, I cannot venture out with out a near miss or some Berk doing something stupid and with out being racist wich I am not. (It is always locals).
For the first 7 years it was novelty, but it no longer is. There will be a narrow section of road enough for 1 car, but instead of waiting before it they will drive into and then stop.
Anticipation driving does not seem to exist. A young girl a few days ago was unsure of the space to pass me from the other direction and it was tight, as she approached me I saw her close her eyes and hope for the best, on this occasion it worked.

Re: Highway Code??? (keep it going)
There is special section for large engined motorbikes that is usually overlooked. It reads:-
Wait until after dark then take your motorbike onto a main road, rev it up 25 times, let go of the brake and do a wheelie, speed off down the road on one wheel out of control, crap yourself because you think you're going to die but don't want to look stupid in front of your mates, accidently regain control and screech to a sudden halt. Act as if you meant it, repeat until it gets light.
Oh and don't forget the one for powerful rear wheel drive cars whereby you pull out of a side-road and before straightening up you smash your right foot to the floor hence zig zagging for the next 200 yards pretending you know what you are doing.

I have had a lot of chuckles from this thread & remembering the good times in Nicosia (RAF) pre '74 the one observation I was told to remember as a driver is that an arm out of the window meant one thing.....the window is open!!

This is true. The other day I am driving back from playing golf. I am behind a guy, the car is weaving all over the road, I think he has to be drunk no one can drive that badly. After a couple of miles I cautiously overtake the guy, he is driving with his knees on the steering wheel and head down texting, unreal !!!!!

And yes remember if you are turning into a side road, don't turn the steering wheel.just sail right across both sides of the road!!! And doesn't matter which exit you want off of the roundabout, keep on the outside!!

The guy who came speeding up behind us. Flashing his headlights and right up our rear end. Pulls out and goes flying past, then hits the breaks and turns left about about 50 ft up the road.
And the slip road at the Army Camp turn off for Esentepe. The ones who turn left at the last second off the main road onto the slip road.

You lot make me laugh in my sleep, and that is not a joke... the wife expressed her concerns.
The wife woke me up this morning telling me "I was chuckling,...
"on what? stop shaking me!!!" I said.
"You were conversing with someone about the highway cod on kibkom", she said of course she had a grin on her face...
" Kibkom, !!!????, go to sleep woman", I said... Tuned my back to her....
Down to reality...
Anyone Can tell me if it is a legal requirement and a must have in the car the items below:
fire extinguisher ?
first aid kit ?
Triangle / reflective vest & light ?
Would you be find / get a penalty point for not having them.
fatsam
Grouch my friend, I have been to spec savers, and was told "blind as a bat, and was given the Boots"...

From what I gather it is correct, I carry them. I think you need them for the stringent MOT test, when they check your mudflaps and engine number.
I think they should also add a section about throwing litter from your car , it should always be thrown from the nearside thus making it easier to collect this rule should also apply to Kittens and Puppies. It would also be considerate to slow down when you jettison your unwanted pet.
