Household Inventions- the Worst and the Best
For me the best is electricity because it gives us light and warmth, the worst is the automatic washing machine because it gives the housewife too much spare time.

The best - sash cord opening windows. The worst - weak sash cords!
No matter how hard the past, you can always begin again.

Re: Household Inventions- the Worst and the Best
my wife never has too much spare time.... She is always busy with something or tether. The house is full of "novelty worn out gadgets". Her latest is the "Tablet" and endless
"yataaa-taaaa yataaaa-teeeee"... clicky doooo clickydaaaa on the keyboard...
cant do anything about her addiction, therefore left her to it.... Blast the inventions they ruined "men" lives,.... too much freedom for the wife...
I guess I will be crucified tonight by my Mrs,... don't care.

Re: Household Inventions- the Worst and the Best
I would probably also say electricity - closely followed living in a country where electricity can be unreliable by batteries. For elderly and infirm people and those with young children and/or animals underfoot, being suddenly plunged into darkness stumbling around by the light of a naked flame (candles and oil lamps) must be dangerous and a strong torch at least is a must! My most valued appliance is a bank of batteries which run lights and computer/CD player when the electric is off.
This winter closely followed by the hot water bottle!
But I am not sure some of these count as "household", nor my third which would be the mobile phone which is both according to how it is used. At best it can be a lifesaver for people travelling alone or walking in countryside; at worst it is a social menace and a traffic hazard
Purely household a frig/freezer in this climate. One can live on cold food; but not stuff than has gone off.

Don't know about the worst, the cleverest has to be the Thermos flask.
It keeps hot things hot and cold things cold.
The really clever bit is - how does it know which is which?

Best. Karcher window vac. Ideal for Cyprus with all the windows and patio doors.
Worst. Push open ends on tablets / cleaning bottles, not easy to open at all and I don't know how little old ladies can manage to Open them.

Yes second that. Childproof tops are a nightmare to open for anyone with arthritic hands and inability to grip things. I have found a device which fits three different sizes of lid and helps to turn it. Also the device to open ring pulls is brilliant.

Re: Household Inventions- the Worst and the Best
I third the one about "childproof" closers. The screw tops for eg local soda water bottles are also a nightmare for arthritic hands and wrists. If anyone knows anywhere West of Girne that sells the gadgets muffin mentions, should be grateful. Meanwhile I have a pair of scissors (Catalkoy Lemar or Supreme I think) which incorporates a grip which opens screw tops .
Thermos flasks work by insulation as Iam sure Vaughan knows. Ditto cold bags which also keep hot foot hot. The prize would go to the person who invented AFFORDABLE insulated houses, but the vested interests in electricity, gas etc. would probably suppress it.

Or maybe you could get someone in the UK to send you an adjustable bottle-opener from Lakeland.
They are great for arthritic hands.

Don't think we could afford to fill the bath with hot water.
