Being one of the many 'yabanci' who would love to become citizens here , I am forever trying to find out when, oh when, it might all happen. Many may know that last November a White Paper concerning citizenship was to be discussed wherein those who had lived here for ten years and who complied with certain criteria, might be able to apply for citizenship (that doesn't mean you will get it, though!). However, it did not get discussed, and then it was to be January and then March, and being a bit of an impatient lady , I asked again of the ministry of the Interior where we are at.

Here is their reply from within the Government Office, which I share for those who are as anxious as I to learn whether this paper will bring about the changes many hope for.

"I asked interior ministry officers about the changes on citizenship procedures and learned that it is still discussed at the TRNC Assembly. They told me it will be clarified after the announcement of presidential election results as electoral prohibitions will be valid until that announcement. This means it will be in May at the earliest. "

It is quite understandable that nothing happens while electioneering is happening, so... roll on May. When and if I hear further, I will share it too.

They make too much easy money via temporary residency visa's, its the carrot being dangled in front of your nose to keep you interested.

That's one way of looking at it, but honestly the number of odd balls such as myself who want to be citizens would not reduce income that much. Anyway, one has to pay for Citizenship and one has to ask how long we will live. So they would still get value for money out of us.

There are very few Brits I know who want citizenship, but I can't speak for Turkish workers.

But 'never say never' - that's what I reckon. Ever the optimist - married to a pessimist, I might add.

I have required a pamphlet for expats who want to do their residency in Alanya Turkey. I will be bringing it back to give to the BRS to show our Government how to inform the new arrivals on what they need to do when applying for residency.

Although we too wait for more information on Citizenship or even the myth of Permanent Residency as opposed to the annual Visa that we all term Temporary Residency, I have grave doubts that the current or any future government would bother to read any pamphlet produced by the "Mother" country on how expats could go about things in KKTC. Should they even consider that it would make life a lot easier all round to adopt an already functioning system - in Turkish as well - then they only need to use the Internet - as most of the Government have either Facebook or Twitter accounts they must know that the Internet exists - and look at things like this: http://www.yttlaw.com/lawoffice/immigra ... ce-permit/

But then again, this is Cyprus, a country I love and will live in for as long as I am allowed by whatever power holds sway over my life. It is also a country that appears to take the greatest of pride in re-inventing a wheel time and time again, just to prove they can! One day maybe, one day.

I think all of us long term stayers should automatically be given citizenship as a reward for sticking it out warts and all.

Thanks Soner, I know this is for Turkey but wouldn't it be nice if the TRNC could provide the same.
Having read this a lot of UK expats who come and go could not get residency in Turkey, it would be 90 days in and 90 days out, with no chance to go to one of the Greek Islands for the day for a new stamp.
The expats here who buy a car have M in the middle of the number plate this lets the police know who are local and who are expats and guess who gets pulled the most??

Deniz1. Comes as no surprise, I have lost count, but it must be in the hundreds over the years, of locals who can't believe we don't have the right to vote. I've even had "are you sure, have you checked with the Government?" When I explain why we can't vote, I still get "I don't understand it, this is your home now" Disenfranchised is a word TC's just don't seem to understand.
