Cyprus Today, Wednesday, mice and rats ...

Don't know if it is true, there are more because of the reasons stated. But here are a few things that certainly 'helps' the increase:
Girne Belediyes policy cleaning weed. They wait till August, leaving a perfect enviroment for mice, rats and snakes, not to mention the danger of fire.
And a Turk will never throw away bread, not even crumbs. But he will leave leftovers for 'the animals' somewhere, meaning the roadside or field he is passing, coming from work.
Many people forget, when leaving the bin outside the garden, for litter to be collected, to make sure the lid is closed. We have all seen the litter, I think, spread everywhere.
And a Turk will, instead of asking you, when his work is finished for the day, where he can put 'the litter', throw it out the window of the car, when passing empty land.
You can do something to avoid mice and rats, use poison or traps, and make sure the hose pipes, I think it is called, from time to time are cleaned with some sort of chemicals to avoid cockroaches and other unpleasent 'things'.
We have not, till now, had any rats up here, but a Turkish jet set family changed that, not caring about litter and throwing food to their dog. A friendly request to that family about the rather dangerous dog was meet with 'NO, not your country'. They have left, lucky you in Ozanköy, and so have the rats.
And yes I do clean up litter and any food thrown, when I see it, and I don't like to do it one bit, but rather that than mice and rats.
No I have nothing against Turks, but most of them, coming to work here, are from small villages, perhaps not knowing better.

banjo, I agree with you.

Another thing that appals me is the state of the refuse bin areas at the back of a lot of Restaurants, with raw and cooked food scattered about, and no lids on the bins.

This is bound to attract flies, cockroaches, rats and other disease-carrying pests, as well as attracting those 'stray dogs'

I do think that the hygiene inspectors should close offending establishments until they get their acts together, it doesn't take much effort to put the rubbish in the bin, close the lid, and hose down the surrounding area - does it?

Last week we spotted a couple of rats in our garden so visited the Lapta Belediye and the following day they sent someone out to help us, can't get fairer than that!
