Car Hire Abroad

Just thought I'd share this to give people a heads up.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-32481382

I'd hang on to the paper side of the UK driving licence if I were you.

Not sure of the legalities if you have an accident etc. with a hire car in the TRNC.

Never been asked for it abroad.

Was asked for it once at Stansted Airport but they were able to call somewhere for the info.

Just for interest, I notice that some companies in the USA now demand an International driving license before they will hire you a car.

Hired a car two weeks ago in turkey from the airport at dalaman .
Handed him paper attachment and was told I don't need that just the photo part .

Like all with UK we are behind everybody else.
Most other country's do not have paper parts anyway it's just photo card part

You are worrying me now as I only have a paper licence, it hasn't been a problem over the last 3 years but I did mention it before travelling. Is this going to affect me?

I suspect it wont be a problem for 99% of the time. As mentioned hirers sometimes just ask for a passport number.

As the lovely Dalartokat has already mentioned this comes into effect early June. According to the BBC website the DVLA has advised that the paper licence be disposed of. However, I would recommend hanging onto it just for the time being as it shows details of any endorsements etc.

The 1% of the time (if unfortunately involved in an accident) is where problems may arise. Worst case scenario is that hire car companies will scrutinise contracts etc. looking for loopholes not to pay out.

I'm not pretending to be an expert, maybe someone else knows more than I do. Its just a heads up really; ask the hire car company.

The need for International drivers licence varies from state to state Texas asks you to have one but I have never been asked for it . Florida seem happy with just the plastic part of licence but take the paper just in case California and Arizona the same

It's just another little big brother excercise.

Log in ,NI number ,driving licence number and naturally that you have to tick the box to go any further meaning you exist and it's all confirmed .....not to mention the fee .

So turn up into most European country's and bet nobody knows anything about it .
Interesting now if you are European ,turn up in the UK what do they do now as there is a problem in reverse for years

I'm not sure about the National Insurance number request either, don't know why they could not have done it with your driver licence number or something else.

I suppose after the 8th June, if someone in UK hires a car for Europe, say Hertz or Avis or another well known brand, their office would know in the country your picking up the hire car. Another passport type fiasco ahead.

I could see it really be computerised for the big firms .
They could buy software access ,pay a fee per enquiry and have dvla direct access eventually .
I do a lot of work for a couple of big hire company's so will check there understanding out and what happens already .

Incidentally my son had a minor bump off a Latvian lorry driver on our UK motorway last year .
The driving licence details taken ,passport number and insurance along with the registration number ....all taken by the police .
Now they say none of it is correct ,your could make it up checking computerisation and details
