On Good Morning Britain today a young girl reported building workers to the police for wolf whistling. Now ladies would you take offence at this or regard it as a compliment ?

My first job I had to walk through Smithfield meat market (1957), loved the whistling, knew looked good that day, it meant no harm. I get upset sometimes now if when on a bus or tube (UK) and I'm being thrown about yet young men sit and look, no standing up anymore for a 75 year old, comes about because women's lib. Sod all this PC s---.

Unfortunately, when further details were provided, it appears this had been happening every day for some time; after attempting to ignore the workmen, one apparently considered it appropriate to stand in her way and adopt an aggressive manner toward her.....
The police (IMO) took the appropriate path by speaking to the company, so that they could deal with their employees - not over the top, but (hopefully) effective.
I don't think that I would be too happy if this happened to my wife/daughter/sister (choose as appropriate)...

At my age my first reaction would be surprise!

When I was younger it would depend on the circs. If I was in company and/or lots of people around I would probably have been flattered. but on my own in an isolated place rather nervous ; and certainly in the circs described above. There is so much can be conveyed by a wolf whistle; from genuine innocent appreciation of a pretty face or figure to sexual harrassment!

Sounds rather like irresponsible, sensationalist reporting to me!

If a wolf whistled at me I'd capture, get it on TV whistling popular tunes and earn loadsa money.

Have an insanely abundant day!

Reading the articles in various publication it seems that if the whistler is drop dead gorgeous and the female a confident heterosexual there is little problem..... i.e. The nature of the whistler seems relevant to the level of offence taken.

I do understand your wink - I think this type of flattery (as that's what I think most mutually attracted people would regard it) has an element of instinctive decision making based on whether they appreciate the compliment because they also find the other party in some way attractive... in this case (the one in the news) obviously not... I just ask, if it was George Clooney doing the whistling, would she have been so offended?

Maybe when you have time to listen to the debate that took place earlier this week on Radio 5 live it might explain some way why this young woman took the decision she did. Your analogy of George Clooney, in my opinion, would not have made any difference to this young woman.
