Hernia repair with a Prolene mesh
Has anyone had a hernia repaired with a mesh? I would be grateful for any feedback of how the operation went, how long it took to recover etc... Thank you

Re: Hernia repair with a Prolene mesh
Using mesh is a standard procedure in most countries. Recovery time, how much pain etc is different in every individual. Some have little or no pain and are back to normal activities in a few weeks. Some have more pain and find normal activities difficult to do even after a few months. Walking is good exercise to do as soon as possible, but leave the gym and too many stretching moves for 4-6 weeks. Drive only when you can do an emergency stop without pain. Don't lie around, get up and move about. Don't stoop, try to stand up straight. Don't lift anything !! Take the pain killers regularly. Don't wait till you're in agony ! They wont work then. Don't get constipated. If you have any problems contact your doctor don't sit and worry. You are paying for their services so don't be afraid to use them. Good luck with your operation.

Re: Hernia repair with a Prolene mesh
Hi, had a hernia repair at Girne state hospital a few years ago and have had absolutely no problems. It was a straightforward stitch job which I am quite grateful for as about 12 years ago I had the same operation (other side) in England where they put a mesh in. I now have a scar like the Grand Canyon as the mesh (according to the surgeon) must not have been sterile and it took two further operations to take the mesh out, which has further left me with damaged nerves in my leg. Hey ho, you take your choice. I am not saying don't get the mesh, but I hope it goes better for you if you choose it. The state hospital actually didn't give me the choice, but I was more than happy with the treatment, the care and the result. Good luck with your operation wherever you decide.

I had the hernia op (with mesh) in Kolan Hospital, Girne, about 3 years back. Good treatment, quick recovery, no probs. I was in overnight and food and accommodation was provided for my wife.

Pappabravo, Do you remember how big your hernia was and what size mesh was used? Mine is 1cm and I can't actually feel it to the touch and the mesh they have said they will use is 11 x 6 cm and the incision will be 6 cm. Judy

Two inches - seems a very small incision - count yourself lucky. I have scar 10 inches in length from a hernia op as child in the UK. If anyone draws attention to it I say a man with a knife slit me open when I was small... it's no lie.judyvin wrote:Pappabravo, Do you remember how big your hernia was and what size mesh was used? Judyvin,
I do not remember how big my hernia was, nor what mesh was used - sorry. I can hardly see my scar, but from memory it was 2 - 3 inches long. Correction to my other post, the hospital was the Kolan in Lefkosa, not Girne.

I have a Hiatus Hernia, which though it doesn't give me too much trouble I have been thinking about getting "done". Anyone any experience of this particular op', cost, time in hospital etc? I live in Iskele, but Nicosia is no problem.
Thanks
