Does anyone know whether it is possible to replace batteries in an iPhone?

Yes it is possible. I have changed mine in two I phones and not that expensive. Most parts are changeable I changed the female part that you plug your charger into also as it had become worn. Havering said all that I did that in UK

If it's an iPhone 4s or 5 take it to an Apple shop a genuine one not here . They will check your battery as there were a lot of faulty ones and replace it for free. We had ours done in Berlin in February.
