Microchip Identification does work in the TRNC
When visitors recently found a Cocker Spaniel dog roaming loose in the mountains they immediately contacted KAR and brought the elderly male dog to the Rescue centre. The poor dog was in a terrible state and after having food and water he was given emergency treatment for a very bad fly infestation to his ears .
He was then checked, by KAR staff, to see if he was fitted with a microchip.
Luckily he was found to have a microchip and immediately enquiries began with the authorities to try and trace the owner. Several days later the Government Vet Dept came back with the owners name and telephone number.
KAR contacted the owner in Lefkosia who said that the dog was taken from his garden in 2008 and he was amazed that he had been found nearly seven years later.
Arrangements were made for the owner to be reunited with his 10 year old Cocker Spaniel the next day at the Rescue Centre.
Unfortunately the poor old dog obviously had been wandering for some time and was not in the best of health but considering he had survived the last seven years it is now hoped that he will be able to spend the rest of his days quietly in his own home.
If it had not been for the microchip (and records) it is unlikely that this dog and owner would ever have been re united.
Proof that microchipping , of pets , can work in the TRNC !

Unfortunately the exception does not prove the rule... KAR are preaching to the converted on this forum I'm afraid.
As the new regs only came in recently I take it the owner valued the dog enough to have it chipped in 2008 before it was stolen.
We've been looking after an abandoned stray for 7 weeks now and she was never chipped.... guess why? Well we are pretty sure we know who the owner was but he obviously didn't want her any more so - best not to chip her then he reckoned... so we can't prove he was the owner - it works against us too Çok ayıp!
The reason behind chipping is only to reunite the owner with their dog... not the reason chipping was instituted here I fear. Enforcement enforcement enforcement!
For every chipped dog I would guess maybe 100 are still not registered....
It is not the cherised dogs that need chippıng it is all the others

Yes amazing even though he was chipped he was on the current register as I did not know they had one then.
I hope in a couple of weeks some news person has an update on how he has settled back in with his old family as it sounds like the old family has some serious vet bills to get the old boy back on the road.
