CIGARETTE Carton Price
Is it correct that cigarettes e.g. Marboro are cheaper here than Duty Free at Ercan or IST?
If so, where's a good place to buy?? I hear there's a tobacconist in Girne???

I think you will find that Ercan Duty free for cigs , is one of the cheapest around, Istanbul is dearer.

My dyslexic mate always said the best tobacconist on the island was a chap he met on the Troodos mountain.
The wife keeps complaining I never listen to a word she says ............. or something like that.

Had to read it a few times but finally got there!brian24001 wrote:My dyslexic mate always said the best tobacconist on the island was a chap he met on the Troodos mountain.
When I smoked (up to 2007) any fags I bought abroad appeared to be full of all sorts of bits and pieces in addition to tobacco. B&H in the UK tasted nothing like you got in the shops in Spain, Greece etc You would get halfway through and come across a twig wedged in or it would suddenly stop burning one one side. They must have had different recipes and I'm guessing the shop ones were hooky.

A few weeks ago a carton of Silk Cut were still 23Euros at Ercan (think IST maybe 25Euros) . The packets I've been buying in local shops @10TL make a carton price of 100TL. Work that out with current exchange rates!!

I assume he also met quite a few skivers up there....brian24001 wrote:My dyslexic mate always said the best tobacconist on the island was a chap he met on the Troodos mountain.
Oddly enough, I used to be "dyslexic" with just one specific word - whenever I passed/was passed by a sign (e.g. on a van) stating "Fred Bloggs, Shopfitter"), I registered "Shoplifter - look again, and realise what it really said.... Nowadays, the brain automatically says, "No, ...fitter....." - but it definitely used to be slightly disconcerting....

Jofra, if you were dyslexic you are still dyslexic.
The British Dyslexia Association definition describes dyslexia as "a learning difficulty that primarily affects the skills involved in accurate and fluent word reading and spelling.”
While treatment will not cure the underlying problem, it aims at helping suffers to handle the disorder.

Re: CIGARETTE Carton Price
My apologies; I (obviously wrongly!) assumed that the use of quotation marks would clearly indicate that I personally am not in reality dyslexic, and that my comment should be treated as a humourous aside. However, from personal experience, I am aware of the problems that real sufferers face. I am also aware that some are prepared (brave enough?) to use humour to handle their difficulties, just as I use humour to handle problems that I may have - I do not seek or accept sympathy; I aim to be treated exactly like anybody/everybody else.

Re: CIGARETTE Carton Price
I know it's all gone a bit off topic, and sorry for that, probbaly my fault, but my problem is actually numbers, I transpose them a lot.
Funny thing is though, I can remember things like my parents first (4 digit!!) phone numner, and my grandparents too, and from an age when I didn't call either of them.
Also my first moped registration and my first (and pretty much all) cars, even my first UK mobile number, strange how the brain works, even when it's a little faulty.

CIGARETTE Carton Price - Update
Ileli quoted 95 TRY for a carton of Marlboro.
They are 23 Euros at ERCAN which is 69 TRY - give or take. I took 600 out but was only allowed to buy 400 on return.
Istanbul is definitely the dearest at 29 Euros a carton.
