What do you want with your Sunday Lunch

We have friends over on holiday and they expressed interest in going out for Sunday Lunch at a local restaurant they'd seen, but I doubt very much if they would enjoy it. No problem with the food, it was excellent, as was the service, but do we really need someone loudly belting out songs throughout the meal, I found it really off putting and it made conversation impossible, then when a few "off duty" line dancers got up and started their routine it completely ruined it for me.
I accept that in an evening entertainment while you're eating is usual, but Sunday Lunch, not for me I'm afraid , I prefer to relax and enjoy my meal in peace.

Elizabeth, am with you 100%. It is becoming more and more difficult to avoid caterwauling when having a meal (in particular the evening) I loathe it, to such an extent I wade through the local papers trying hard to find somewhere where we are not inflicted with it. Rather than having a list of people recommending this singer and that singer, why don't we start having a list of places we can go to have a decent meal without a racket to accompany our food and drink. I'd start with Morellos in Karaoganoglu very good food and not a singer within a mile.

Could not agree more. I dont go out often, but when I have a meal with friends I want to have a conversation, not be unable to order a meal, let alone talk to them because of loud music (not usually to my taste anyway)! When I have visitors I usually book in advance - mainly to check there will be no music.

But what do you mean "Sunday Lunch at a local restaurant" Elizabeth? Do you mean you want a local (ie Turkish Cypriot) meal,, or a traditional English roast lunch at a nearby place?

I meant a Sunday roast at a restaurant nearby, we actually went to this place a couple of weeks ago following some positive reviews, sadly we weren't aware that there was music. Such a pity as it was as good as people had said, but music being played far too loud and line dancing as an extra is not my idea of a pleasant lunch out with friends.

Unfortunately a lot seem to like it-maybe it makes up for some folks lack of conversational skills?

Funny isnt it a few years ago live music was a novelty now we are swamped with it. Progress?? Not for me.

Not sure of your area but can highly recommend Al Shaheen at Karakoum. Staff always there to welcome youi, good hot meal and plenty of it.They are also there to thank you when leaving.Courtesy goes a long way. No lunchtime music,or Sunday evenings

Thank goodness for Silver Rocks. No live music, no recorded music, no tv screens. Just good old fashioned food and drink with great views and excellent service. Why do so many restaurants not get it?

We also avoid restaurants with live music. We go to eat and socialise, not be deafened by warblers, and loud guitars. If we want music we just go for a drink and a listen, but not often. Prefer to listen to our own original music in the comfort of our own garden. With a drink or two. Can't stand tribute bands/singers, especially when you are having a meal and a quiet(???) chat.

Having read the above, it looks as if we could start our own Organisation. Mind you we won't find ourselves in the Social pages of C2D, it seems only the caterwauling nights get any publicity!! I bet you a pound to a penny, we'd be inundated with singers wanting to serenade us.

Could not agree more with above comments, we like to go out to enjoy the company of friends and have a good meal. without loud music and entertainers.

If we fancy live music (and there is not a lot I like to choose from) then we make the decision to go to that particular restaurant.

I think the best thing is for me to ring to book a table then ask if they have live music, if the answer is yes then I will just cancel, at least that way we won't be caught out again.

I think that is best Elizabeth, as I said it is what I do when I have visitors. There seem to be quite a few restaurants that do a traditional roast lunch, so you could try others.sometimes at lunch time even those that dont normally have music at lunchtime are the venue for a special event,

This thread is something of a comfort to me - I was beginning to think I was in a minority preferring peace and quiet to aid digestion rather than someone else' idea of "music"

We arrived Tuesday went to what had been a quiz music free free evening only to find some no mark warm up after we had ordered drinks
Luckily we had not ordered a bottle of wine so made our excuses and left and went somewhere quiet that evening

Great to read the above because I too was beginning to think I was a "miserable old cow" . I have relatives out later and know they will want to go somewhere of an evening once or twice a week where there is music. I will drop them and then pick them up at end of evening. There was music in our village last night, someone who lived about 10 metres away went there at about 1 developed into fight police came, A HAPPY EVENING BY ALL. Not for me.

We really dislike the live music when eating, and in my opinion, the standard of some of the 'acts' would mean they didn't even make Working Men's Clubs back home. However the owners must think they bring in the punters or they would save their money. Unfortunately they may well be here to stay.
We also scrutinise the ads and visit restaurants that either have no live music, or go there when the warblers have a night off.
