An old sit up and beg Ford Anglia, DSB18 - beige, battered - had been my mothers! I was 18, ran it for 2 years and then bought myself a Fiat (was living in Tanganyika, as it was, then) I think the person who took it over had it repainted another colour as it was quite well known around the streets of Dar!! (or should I say notorious?)

Bought a 1959 Morris Minor in 1976, at the age of 18, from the wages earned working in a Poultry Farm for the summer, between school and University. The suspension & chassis fell apart spectacularly two years later, thanks to Edinburgh's cobbled streets (and my youthful driving habits).

My first car was a second hand, Ford Cortina (car of the year when new), some 2 years old in about 1965. I paid a deposit of £170 (4 years savings) and a small balance on "tick". I had it for less than a year when it spent more time in garages than on the road. The clutch housing had been repaired with a baked bean tin and in wet weather the car was an indoor swimming pool. Ultimately I gave it to somebody who could afford the latest garage bill for bearings, track ends and you name what else. 4 years savings lost to no end. I have a morbid hatred of all things "Ford" and to this day refer to the Ford "Focus" as a "Fokker" or similar word !

Blue Austin A50, £100 in 1966. Gear change on steering wheel-- never seen one before, so stalled frequently and my sons refused to come out with me until I'd mastered it.

I had a very very old green mini that cost me £50 but the real cost was the insurance which was a huge sum of money - £75, more than the cost of the car.

It had rope on the inside of the doors that you used to have to push down then you had to thump the door with your shoulder just to get out!

Most of the wooden bits had fallen off but I loved it.

I kept it going for 4 years until one of the front wheels fell off on the way into the works car park one morning!

My first car was a grey and red Mini which I bought with my then partner when we arrived in Australia and found you needed a car if you wanted to get anywhere as public transport was pathetic and Perth was a very extended city. I also got my driving license within a couple of months of arriving in Oz as car transport was a necessity, not a luxury. I'd previously lived in London where public transport was brilliant. The Mini was pretty clapped out but did us proud until we traded it in for a sporty Fiat. Thought I was the bees' knees in that Fiat!

VW Scirocco...based in Germany with the forces in mid 70's. Left hand drive. It looked very sporty but only had an 1100cc engine! Banana yellow in colour.

Had fund times with that car, my wife who I met when we had the car never forgets it.

Kept it for four years...sad to see her go.

I bet nobody else had a Berkely? Or even heard of it.

I desperately wanted a Sports Car but of course couldn't afford one. This was a limited production of a cheap two seater made as , I think, an experiment, by a Caravan manufacturer. It looked great but actually had a small two stroke engine and could possibly do 40mph downhill with a following wind. Despite that no insurers would cover it for anyone under 21 (I was 17) so the gilt was taken off the gingerbread of independence by having to get my father to insure it, and put me on the policy as a named driver.

Good grief: Dont say after all this time and distance I have found someone who knows it.

Yes, Soner, very like that from memory, but headlights and radiator seem different. I have got a photo of mine somewhere, but cant put my hand on it - will keep looking.

What I did find was a photo of the first car I ever DROVE which was my father's Wolsley 1500 - a economy version of the posher Wolseys (which I seem to remember were used by the Police is those days) . A very handy nippy little car, and easy to drive.

A Java Green Mini 1000 - most fun car I've ever owned and I could get a full drum kit in it!
